Bar Marsella

Bar Marsella - Hemingway bar famous for absinthe | Gimme Some Barcelona Travel Guide

Bar Marsella

What It Is:

The legendary bar in El Raval, known especially for their absinthe.

Where It’s Located:

Why We Love It:

This bar was famously a hangout for Hemingway, Picasso, Dalí and Van Gogh back in the day. And as you will see when you walk in, the memorable decor (and cobwebs) haven’t been touched since. ;)  We take all of our visitors here when they come to Barcelona, and it’s always a fave.

Menu Recommendations:

  • Absinthe, the once-reputed-hallucinogenic (not true) drink of legend, is the house specialty. It has a heavy anise (black licorice) flavor to it, so if that’s not your thing, take a sip of your friend’s absinthe, just to say you’ve tried it. ;)

Other Tips:

  • How to drink absinthe: simply put the fork on top of your drink, place the sugar cube atop the fork, and slowly rinse the cube with the water bottle provided until it dissolves in the drink below. Then stir, enjoy and imagine all the legends that have circulated in this space over the years.
