Nudo ‘Adopt A Tea Garden’ GIVEAWAY

Calling all of you tea lovers! (And any of you who might be looking for a holiday gift for tea lovers!)  Today we are introducing an extra-special Adopt A Tea Garden giveaway from Nudo.

For years, I have loved Nudo and their popular Adopt An Olive Tree program, where you literally “adopt” a tree in Italy for a year and get its fruit — the yummy olive oil — shipped right to your doorstep. (You can even go hug your tree if you happen to be traveling in Italy!)

But I was super excited when I found out about a new program they are offering with organic Darjeeling tea! The concept is similar. When you adopt a Darjeeling tea garden for a year (and you even get to choose the garden and grower), you will then be some of the finest quality “first flush” loose leaf tea four times a year from your garden. Seriously, how cool is that?!?

Even better, the Adopt A Tea Garden program is all about sustainability. Nudo teamed up with local producers to restore deserted tea gardens, which were until now unsustainable, for the program. Using biodynamic and organic farming practices, local farmers can now reopen those tea gardens, creating more jobs for the local tea pickers and growers and creating the opportunity for the younger generation to learn the skills that their families have practiced for centuries.

I just adopted my own garden this month, and cannot wait for my garden to begin harvesting soon! The process of adopting your own tea garden with Nudo is really simple and can be done in just a few minutes. But if you’re like me and love reading all of the stories about the different growers and gardens and “tasting notes” of each tea, it might take a few delightful minutes longer.

Here are the basics though:

Step 1: The first step is to decide if you want to adopt a tea garden for yourself, or for someone else as a gift. I adopted a garden for myself, simply because I love drinking tea year-round and thought it would be so cool to invest in a garden halfway around the world. But I have already thought of a few friends who might also love this for a gift this holiday season.

(Other option — if you and some friends in town wanted to go in together on a subscription, you receive plenty of tea each quarter to share!)

Step 2: The next step was my favorite — choosing your tea garden.

As you can see, Nudo allows you to scroll through and read about all of the different gardens participating in the program, and learn about the “tasting notes” of the tea they produce and the pluckers who care for them.

After reading all of their stories, I ended up choosing Chong Tong, as pictured above. As the description said, chongtong means ‘the place to drink tea’, and is nestled in the beautiful Himalayas. I liked the description of the tea for that garden, being “a bright cup with light color, a bouqet or floral aroma, and a sophisticated flavor”.

But what won me over was learning about the plucker. One of only three women holding her position? Go Bimla!!

3. View Your Adoption Deliveries – This final step was a bit educational to me. I have been drinking tea my entire life, but have to admit I never even knew what a “flush” was with a tea garden. It turns out that “tea flushes” are the tea growing seasons with Darjeeling tea. Each flush has slightly different characteristics, as mentioned above. So when your tea harvest arrives each season, you can have slightly different teas to enjoy. Pretty cool.

I am looking forward to receiving my first shipment in the spring. But in the meantime, Nudo kindly sent me some samples to try. And after drinking them lots this past weekend (did I mention it is 5 degrees and snowing in KC?), I am now a 100% fan. This tea is genuinely very high quality and so tasty. But I love it most just knowing the stories and connections behind it.
