Quotes from The Hobbit

Tolkien creates clever, witty and profound dialogue, which Jackson pulls from for his film adaptations, but there are narrative lines that can’t quite be captured or translated in a film — like this one “when there was less noise and more green”. More green? Seriously? So good.

Part of Tolkien’s mastery is in making the simplest string of words tell the most profound thoughts. Whether it’s Bilbo muttering practical encouragement to himself or Thorin having a bit of a lightbulb moment, Tolkien shows that you don’t have to use fancy words to get deep concepts across.

These are just a few of my favourite quotes from The Hobbit.

  1. The second two quotes are both dog-eared in my old Hobbit copy! Here are a couple other of my favorites:

“There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go.” — Gandalf

A good reminder…and it’s the human condition to always be in the unsafe “this part of the world.”

And another Gandalf quote that helps when the Edge of the Wild is particularly trying:

    “But things may change yet.”

    • ah, yes! I had both of those marked, as well. Gandalf always has something good to say. I wonder how long it took for Tolkien to come up with his bits of wisdom — lots of editing, or immediate inspiration?
