the flask

Hobbit flask created by Stellar Custom Images

Let’s talk about that Hobbit flask. You get a 6 oz stainless steel flask sporting the vivid vintage book cover of The Hobbit; plus care instructions to ensure you can enjoy your flask for a long, long time. Stellar Custom Images‘ designs are coated with a thick epoxy resin that protects against the elements, so you don’t have to worry about your favourite Hobbit flask scratching or peeling. You may forget your pocket-handkerchiefs, but don’t leave behind your Hobbit flask the next time you run out the door on a dragon adventure.

Whether you turn out to be the lucky winner or you choose to buy a flask, you will appreciate the quality and clean simple detailing of Angela’s work. Be sure to check out the other designs she has and note that Angela can create custom flasks as well. Don’t forget to order a sweet flask-sized funnel, too.

the posters

Nicholas Hyde creates original art prints for well-loved films and characters. The vivid colours and simple, creative designs will complement whatever wall they hang on. Nicholas makes all the designs himself and each one is a mixture of inspired-doodling, hand-drawn illustration and computer graphics. One winner will receive two 11×17 posters — one of The Hobbit  & one of The Shire.

the tote

Not all those who wander are lost – technically this quote is from Tolkien’s sequel to The Hobbit, but it’s still fitting for Hobbit week. Can’t you picture Bilbo carrying around just such a tote; filled of course with extra pocket-handkerchiefs, pipe tobacco, and probably some seed cakes in case he had to miss second breakfast. What would you fill your tote with?

Tote photo courtesy of Kimberly Layton

Tote is made of 100% natural cotton canvas {10oz.} with a strong bottom gusset and is 15″ square by 4″ deep.

HandmadeandCraft is currently closed for vacation so you can’t shop Kimberly Layton’s creations today, but go check out her blog, Everything Etsy, and say hi.

I have only read The Hobbit twice…but I have read the LOTR 5 times over. Currently on round 6!

    • bet — December 10, 2012 @ 8:27 am (#)

yeah, I think I’ve now read The Hobbit three or four times and the LOTR six, maybe seven times. so good every time.

once I took Fellowship with me to Ireland and finished it faster than I expected and ended up buying a copy of Two Towers because I couldn’t wait until I got home to start it again. :)

  2. Treva — December 10, 2012 @ 8:25 am (#)

Smaug is by far my favorite character in the hobbit :)

    • bet — December 10, 2012 @ 8:32 am (#)

      intriguing. care to elaborate?

  3. Treva — December 10, 2012 @ 8:27 am (#)

And apparently I can’t read instructions ;) I’ve read the Hobbit probably around 4 or 5 times, starting with 5th Grade! It was a book for class! :) One of my all time favorites in required reading! :)

    • bet — December 10, 2012 @ 8:32 am (#)

Seriously. I never got to read it as “required reading” – but how amazing that reading The Hobbit could be your homework??

  4. Sarah M. — December 10, 2012 @ 9:39 am (#)

I love this so much. I’m going to be so jealous of whoever wins it!

    • bet — December 10, 2012 @ 10:03 am (#)

you do know that you can try to win it yourself, don’t you? :)

  5. Julie P — December 10, 2012 @ 10:56 am (#)

    Love Samwise Gamgee!!

  6. Julie P — December 10, 2012 @ 10:57 am (#)

Okay, I need to read a bit better. I do love Samwise Gamgee. I’ve only started to read the book this past year. I’m a late bloomer :)

    • bet — December 10, 2012 @ 11:14 am (#)

It’s never too late, Julie! :) With Tolkien, it seems things happen when they’re supposed to happen.

  7. Melody Harris — December 10, 2012 @ 11:01 am (#)

I’ve read at least half a dozen times. And my fave is Galadriel! Always and forever.

    • bet — December 10, 2012 @ 11:12 am (#)

you’ve read The Hobbit 6 times – or LOTR? (or both)

whose your favourite character in The Hobbit? (Galadriel doesn’t show up until LOTR; crazy to think of all the great characters that didn’t even exist yet in Tolkien’s imagination when he first wrote The Hobbit)

  8. maux — December 10, 2012 @ 11:12 am (#)

I’ve always wanted a flask. This is my chance.

    • bet — December 10, 2012 @ 11:17 am (#)

may the best flask-fan win! :)

  9. Mallory — December 10, 2012 @ 12:27 pm (#)

    Do want.

  10. Jared — December 10, 2012 @ 4:35 pm (#)

I’ve read it only once, but always memorable.

  11. Meghan — December 10, 2012 @ 8:43 pm (#)

Love Bilbo for his internal tug of war between his hobbity homebodyishness (new words!) and his secret yen for adventure, provided it is an adventure on a full stomach.

  12. Amy — December 11, 2012 @ 8:00 am (#)

Those posters are pretty great!! I might have to get one even *if* I don’t win this!

  13. Erin @ The Spiffy Cookie — December 11, 2012 @ 10:05 am (#)

I am not sure. At least twice

  17. Kimiko — December 11, 2012 @ 4:55 pm (#)

I’ve only read the book once, and I’m overdue to read it again. M favorite character is Gandalf.

  18. Julie — December 11, 2012 @ 5:20 pm (#)

i’ve only read it once, but its a classic that i’m definitely going to re-read soon!

  19. Theresa J — December 11, 2012 @ 5:43 pm (#)

I actually have only read half of it

  20. Bree Courtney — December 11, 2012 @ 9:38 pm (#)

    Zero! Haha so far…..

  21. Jessica W — December 12, 2012 @ 8:22 pm (#)

  22. Donna O'Neil — December 13, 2012 @ 10:14 am (#)

    At least 4 times.

  23. stefanie phelps — December 13, 2012 @ 4:42 pm (#)

I couldn’t even say I read it a few times I believe when I was younger and am about to read it again. Maybe 3 then.

  24. Melissa — December 15, 2012 @ 1:13 pm (#)

I love hobbits!!!! Went immediately after I got out of work last night! Awesome film, amazing books, incredible contest! Love those prints– Harshness is awesome!

    • bet — December 15, 2012 @ 3:35 pm (#)

      agreed :)

  25. Alice Wu — December 16, 2012 @ 12:45 am (#)

I’ve only read it once, but the new movie has inspired me to revisit Tolkien’s world.

    • bet — December 16, 2012 @ 10:30 am (#)

yes! I love how the movies make you want to read the books. That isn’t always the case; but even as good as the movies are (and they are my favourite movies!), they are not enough in and of themselves — I need the books, too.

  26. Kristin — December 16, 2012 @ 6:58 pm (#)

I’ve read The Hobbit two or three times now. Either way, it’s awesome every time.

  27. Nicah — December 18, 2012 @ 9:18 am (#)

I haven’t read it yet, but I’ve already asked “Santa” for JRR Tolkien’s LOTR books and I know I’ve been good this year. ;)

    • bet — December 18, 2012 @ 9:31 am (#)

yay! let me know how you like them after you’ve read them!

  28. Helen — December 18, 2012 @ 10:53 am (#)

Have read the Hobbit at least twice. Sacrilegious, but I think I preferred the Hobbit over LoTR as a 12 year old. Though the LoTR movies were EPIC, not to mention the soundtrack. So gorgeous.

    • bet — December 18, 2012 @ 10:55 am (#)

It’s not sacrilegious – it’s your opinion. :) Have you seen the Hobbit movie (pt 1), yet?

  29. Manny — December 18, 2012 @ 4:01 pm (#)

I’ve only read the Hobbit a few times, but Lord of the Rings, too many times to count!

Gandalf is my favorite, but I feel like that was heavily influenced by my Grandpa reading the book to me when I was really young.

    • bet — December 18, 2012 @ 4:18 pm (#)

how great to hear these stories read by your Grandpa! what a fun memory.

  30. sara — December 19, 2012 @ 10:02 am (#)

    Just once!

  31. Chelsea — December 19, 2012 @ 12:48 pm (#)

I’ve read “The Hobbit” once and loved it!

  32. Cynthia L. — December 21, 2012 @ 3:14 pm (#)

I’ve only read The Hobbit once.
