Buffalo Chicken Dip

Who’s ready for the Super Bowl this weekend?

Wait, better question, who’s ready for all of those legendary Super Bowl dips this weekend?!?

Oh yeah.  Because let’s be real — pizza slices and chicken wings are lovely and all, but Super Bowl Sunday is absolutely, deliciously, 1000% all about those dips. Each year, I count on being able to pile my plate high with all of the spinach artichoke dip, seven layer dip, salsa, hummus, elote dip and guacamole that it can possibly handle. Plus every kind of chip, cracker, veggie stick and other kinds of dippers imaginable. But most importantly, I always reserve extra room on this special occasion for the best game day dip of all time — buffalo chicken dip

The Super Bowl’s just not the Super Bowl in my book unless this dip is on the table. So year after year, I’m always the one who happily volunteers to bring it. And year after year, our friends always polish off every single last bite. It never lets us down!

So if you happen to be the one raising your hand to bring the buffalo chicken dip this year, here’s the recipe I’ve made dozens of times over the years. I can vouch from years and years of Super Bowl dipping that it’s always, always a winner.

Buffalo Chicken Dip Ingredients:

To make this easy buffalo chicken dip recipe, you will need:

  • Cooked chicken: You can either cook up and shred a few chicken breasts for this recipe, or take a shortcut and just shred a rotisserie chicken. Whatever works best for you!
  • Cream cheese: One brick! I usually opt for the reduced-fat variety, but any kind will do.
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese:  Ditto what I said about the cream cheese. :)
  • Plain Greek yogurt: And do be sure that it’s plain, not vanilla.
  • Hot sauce: I’m Team Frank’s all the way when it comes to buffalo chicken dip. Their classic hot sauce is my favorite by a mile. But that said, feel free to use any variety of hot sauce that you love for this recipe.
  • Blue cheese: I like to add this to the dip itself and also sprinkle some on top. But if you’re not into blue cheese, feta would also work.
  • Thinly sliced green onions: We will add these to the dip itself and also sprinkle some on top.

Feel free to serve it with tortilla chips or crackers, veggie sticks (celery and carrot sticks are often traditional here), any kind of bread, or whatever other dippers sound delicious.

How To Make Buffalo Chicken Dip:

When it comes to making this dip, really, all you need to do is stir it altogether and heat it thoroughly. So feel free to do so however you prefer — in the oven, on the stovetop, or in a slow cooker. (Sorry, this recipe doesn’t work well in the Instant Pot.)  Simply…

Baked Buffalo Chicken Dip:  Heat oven to 350°F. Stir all of your ingredients together in a mixing bowl, then transfer to an 8×8-inch or 9×9-inch baking dish and spread the dip out in an even layer. Bake for about 20-25 minutes until heated through and slightly bubbly around the edges. Serve warm, sprinkled with your desired toppings.

Stovetop Buffalo Chicken Dip:  Stir all ingredients together in a large saucepan over medium heat (stirring occasionally). Cook for about 15 minutes or until the dip nearly reaches a simmer. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve warm, sprinkled with your desired toppings.

Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip:  Stir all ingredients together in the bowl of a slow cooker until combined. Cook on low for about 2-3 hours, or until the cheese is melted and the dip nearly reaches a simmer. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve warm, sprinkled with your desired toppings.

Possible Variations:

Want to mix things up with this buffalo chicken dip recipe? Feel free to:

  • Make it vegetarian: I have a terrific recipe for Buffalo Cauliflower Dip here on the blog if you would like a meatless version! Or, you’re welcome to use chickpeas, crispy tofu, or other veggies in place of the chicken.
  • Make it spicier: Feel free to add in extra hot sauce and/or a few pinches of crushed red chili flakes if you would really like to set this dip on fire.
  • Make it milder: Use half of the recommended amount of buffalo sauce.
  • Use a different cheese: As mentioned above, if you’re not into blue cheese, feel free to substitute feta (or a bit more mozzarella).

  12. Love this version! I could eat that stuff for breakfast lunch and dinner!

  13. This is by far one of my favorite dips, so simple, but so good! Im definitely going to have to try this lightened up version..help me drop some of these baby pounds! :P Looks awesome!

  14. I could totally take a bath in this.

  15. Yum yum yum! This looks amazing! I don’t think you would miss the fat at all!

  17. Made this for the super bowl & substituted feta for blue cheese, it was AMAZEBALLS!!!!!! Will definitely make again :)

  18. This recipe is absolutely delicious. But can you tell me if you can freeze it?

  19. I made this on my 4th of July potluck and it was a favorite among my friends. Thanks for the delish recipe! I’m a new food blogger, so I would love for you to check out my blog and let me know what you think of my recipes!

  20. This was so good . I made it twice and it came out better the socond time. I over cooked the first time so it was a little dried out.

  21. I also add minced garlic, onion and chopped celery into my dip for added low/no cal volume that tastes great!

A little cilantro adds great flavor, too.

  22. I just made this dip – it’s incredible! Tastes just like the ‘real’ / full fat buffalo dip! I didn’t use the optional ranch powder (didn’t have any on hand). I’ve very glad I decided to use this recipe!

  23. Do you think this would be ok served room temp instead of warm?

  24. Does anyone know the Nutricinal Value to this Dip??

  25. I just made this for the super bowl and we all LOVED it! I used some low fat Ranch dressing from TJ’s instead of the powder. I couldn’t find low fat blue cheese crumbles, so I used regular ones. I seriously do not miss the extra fat!! I didn’t bake it, I just kept heating it in the microwave, so easy and yummy!

  26. I made this for my final clinical of nursing school! Nobody believed me that it was the “healthy” version! My new favorite its delicious!

  27. This dip is sooooo good! I just made it for lunch and smeared it between a flour tortilla for quesadillas. Yum!

  28. just made this for new years eve…came out AMAZING! thanks for the great tasting “skinny” recipe!

  29. These recipes are great and delicious

  30. This recipe is fantastic!  Thank you so much!
Taking this to a Superbowl party tonight.

  31. I wanted to make this vegetarian, so I chopped up cauliflower into small florets, roasted them for a while, until it was softened and lightly browning at the tips. I kept the rest of the recipe the same, and it was really tasty.

  32. This recipe is SO GOOD! I first made it for the Super Bowl back in February and I think my husband has asked me to make it at least 5 or 6 times since then. Great work!

  33. Just made this. It is so good! Tastes just like the full fat version. I used the half greek yogurt half cream cheese from kroger for the reduced fat cream cheese! yum!! served with multigrain baguette and celery sticks.

    • Yay, we’re so happy to hear that Jamie (isn’t it great when you can make something lighter and not be able to taste that it’s lighter)?! :)

  34. Made a regular version of this recipe first from another website and it came out a total mess.  Now the wife and I get requests for this low fat version at every party we go to. And we usually triple or quadruple the recipe!

  35. I just followed this recipe and you guys don’t even need the ranch seasoning, it’s perfect without it!

  36. I made this last night for a New Year’s Eve party and it was a hit. Everyone loved it and no one could tell it was a lightened up recipe. Thanks for sharing!

  37. If I make this in the crockpot, does the chicken still have to be precooked before i can throw it in for four hours?

    • Hi Karlie! Yes, you should use cooked chicken. Cook on high for 1.5 – 2 hours, or until the cheeses are all melted, or on low for 3-4 hours, or until the cheeses are all melted. We hope you enjoy!

  38. Can you taste the blue cheese ?????? Hate blue cheese so I worry this will ruin the dip

    • Yes, you can taste it, but we don’t think it’s overpowering! If you hate blue cheese, we would recommend subbing it with a cheese you like. We hope you enjoy!

  39. Hi, I’d love to try making this- how many people does it serve?

    • Hey there! This makes about 5 cups — we’re not sure what the serving size should be, but we’d guess around maybe 1/4 cup. We hope you enjoy!

  40. Ooooh this looks incredible! No big game coming up but I’m making it for a family bbq tomorrow! :)

  41. This one is always a hit!

  42. Made this for the Super Bowl and received so many compliments!! My husband said it was better than the other recipes I had made.  Creamy, meaty, and just the right amount of heat/spice. Definitely recommend.

    • We’re so glad to hear that, Tricia, and we appreciate you giving the recipe a try! :)

  43. Do you use full fat or low-fat Greek yogurt?

    • Hi Elizabeth! We use fat-free Greek yogurt, but you could use 2% or full-fat (just wouldn’t be as “skinny”). :) We hope you enjoy!

  44. Would this be good as a meal prep? I usually have busy days with school and work and need a pick me up when I have downtime. So if I make this on a Monday, would it be good for the following day or is it best served immediately?

  45. Do you have a non dairy version of this dip? I love this one but my wife is lactose intolerant.

  46. What do you serve this dip with? Some type of chip?

  47. As a Buffalonian thank you for doing this right with Frank’s and blue cheese :) <3

  48. Looks fantastic! Would like to make it for Memorial day. Any ideas about a substitution for the Blue cheese though? I’m personally not fan of it. Thank y’all for any ideas!

  49. I made this for a party and it was a hit. I omitted the blue cheese and just didn’t replace it with anything. Came out great. I can’t for the life of me find any sort of calorie content or nutrition facts listed, however?
