“Challenge accepted.”  –How I met your mother anyone?
A couple of my favorite bloggers have been doing a seasonal “Pinterest Challenge”  for the past year or so. Basically their motto is “Stop pinning and start doing!” Great plan right?

I went to Target and ran across a great rug that was marked down to $7.00. I immediately knew that 1.) I should buy it. 2.) Tanner would hate it right from the start because it was so slick.
Luckily for him I already had a plan. I remembered seeing a pin about a DIY non-slip rug. I decided to give it a try myself. The original DIY used caulk, but I gave it a try with hot glue. So far it is working great! And Tanner approves!

What you’ll need:

  • A rug
  • Hot glue and glue gun

What you’ll do:

  • Flip your rug over onto the back side.
  • Make long even lines all the way down the rug until you have covered the entire rug.
  • Let the glue dry completely.
  • Flip your rug back over to the front side.
  • That’s it! No more shifty, slippery rugs.

So simple right? Your dog could do it.

  1. Sweet! Love the rug, and that sweet framed mirror — and you guys have a Rhodes??

    • We just got it! Tanner got a great deal on it and is going to fix it up a bit. Needs a little TLC! You are welcome to play on it anytime you would like! ;)

  2. you can also use silicone calking!

  3. Brilliant! We had this rug and every member of my family almost took a fall because of it. Sadly, I washed the rug (per the instructions) and it completely faded. I may just have to go pick up another one after seeing this, though :)

    • I feel you! Our last rug didn’t go so well either and we ended up giving it away. The hot glue seems to be working though on this one! :)

  4. Cute rug! I’m going to have to add something to my kitchen rug to keep it from sliding around. Glad to read it’s so easy!

  5. Liz;
What about laundering/cleaning? With the glue on the back will you machine wash it or?

    • Judi,
Great question… I am most likely going to hand wash and dry it just to make sure the glue stays intact. I don’t think the glue would hold up well in the wash!

  6. I’ve heard caulking removes the finish on your floors, but i doubt dried hot glue would. I’ll have to try this!

  7. This is a great idea, and thats a cute rug! Thanks for sharing!

  8. I wonder if puff fabric paint would work? When my daughter was an infant I made her nonskid socks.

  9. This BRILLIANT DIY tip surely has saved my “child” TEX (a pit bull) from our new rug that slid across the hard wood floors and nothing would work. So THANK YOU very much!!! From Mel and Tex in Sin City ;)

  10. I tried the hot gun and thought it works great. Later I found marks on my hardwood floors The only way I could get it off was to scrap it with my fingernail. It may work great on tile but I would not recommend it for hardwood.

  11. This didn’t work on my area rugs. All the glue came off. Its a different fabric though.

  12. Will this work for a runner on top of wall to wall carpet, standard pile? Thanks
