Training for the 3-Day (60 mile) Walk for Breast Cancer!

That’s right! I’m excited to announce that this first giveaway of the year is actually sponsored by Reebok, who has actually just released a sweet new line of EasyTone shoes and apparel (check it here), and are encouraging everyone to share their own ideas for making ’11 a healthier new year. I admit that I’ve never been great with New Year’s resolutions (case in point — hoped last year to learn to crochet/knit, but all I have to show for it is half of a potholder!! :S), but I do have a few hopes of my own for this year…

My main goal is to get a little more disciplined with strength training. As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of walking (partly because of the health benefits, partly because I find it a natural and therapeutic form of exercise, and partly because I’ve now recruited a bunch of friends to be walking buddies) — usually log at least 3-4 miles/day.

Unfortunately, I’m pretty inconsistent with anything beyond that. But I know that strength training is the key to just about everything, and my personal trainer friends tell me that even 5 minutes a day can make a huge difference. So, ahem – hear me now. My hope for the year is 5 minutes less a day staring at a computer, and at least 5 simple minutes getting stronger. Whoo! :)

What about you? What area of health and wellness is your focus area for this year? Is it some sort of physical exercise? Healthier eating habits? Seeking a little less stress and mental wellness?

  1. I have many different fitness goals but in addition to those goals, my husband and I are cutting out red meat, and incoporating more local fruits and veggies.

  2. I am going to try and eat more whole foods this year!

  3. I am really focusing on not indulging in sweet treats (besides a bit of daily dark chocolate) for dessert during on week days. That way, on the weekends it is a real treat to have some dessert. I need less sugar and fat in my life. :-) Thanks for the giveaway!

  4. I have a mind set for this year to improve my mind, body soul:
mind- not be so hard on myself on the little things!
body- continue to keep my fitness up while trying to new activities
soul- channel stress in a healthy mannor

  6. I am trying to eat less sugar and sodium. Working out has never been issue for me. I love it.

  7. I’m using the website Health Month to stick to my resolutions this year – my biggest ones are to eat more fruits, veggies, and whole grains, and to exercise at least 5 days a week.

  8. I will be kicking my husband and myself out of bed in the morning to go for a 1 – 2 mile walk. Then when the weather heats up a bit, we’ll progress to a run :) In theory, anyway.

  9. I plan to cut caffeine from my diet and drink more water.

  10. My goal for 2011 is to focus on cleaning up my diet. Not restricting myself from the food I enjoy, just making sure that food is as free from “fake” stuff as possible. Trying to eat whole foods and eliminating the refined and processed stuff. Sure, I’ll allow myself a few exceptions but I’m hoping to fuel my body with food that it actually knows how to process!

  11. My goals for 2011 are to work out for a minimum of 3 times a week. I already eat relatively healthy, but I’m a bit on the lazy side. I’ve got to keep my heart healthy and get up and move!

  12. I’m going to get serious about finding new, healthy brown bag lunches. I save so much money by packing my own lunch, but as things get busy I usually just fall back on sandwiches with some kind of deli meat and cheese, which is easy but even stops being yummy after a while.

  13. I plan to drink more water and walk more. Both my pup and I could use a lot more exercise!

  14. I also tweeted about this :)

  15. I will be starting a new way of eating…tomorrow :)

Seriously, though, I have gained some weight over the holidays and can’t wait to see it go away and take some more of its friends with it. I will be starting Weight Watchers tomorrow to help me get it under control NOW!!

  16. I will be continuing my commitment to daily exercise, at least 20 mins and reducing the sugar and alcohol I consume Oh! And doing something fun with my friends once a week. AND, I want to try growing some herbs and lettuces, too!

  17. I tweeted about this, but apparently I am a huge idiot and cannot figure out how to get the url of only one status. Here is my feed anyways – https://twitter.com/blbst36

  18. First of all, I loved your top 10 of 2010 post! I will be trying the homemade apple cider very soon!

I very much want 2011 to be a healthier year! My rheumatoid arthritis has put me on disability and has made any type of high impact or strength training workout regimen out of the question. But that won’t stop me!
Since I can’t throw myself into working out, I’ve joined Weight Watchers this year. I also bought a pedometer and am starting on a low-impact walking routine–at least 3500 steps per walk for the first week and then, if my joints permit, I will increase it from there!
Also, I will continue going to my water aerobics classes twice a week!

Best of luck on your strength training!

  19. I’d like to Zumba at least 3 times a week.

  20. tweet-https://twitter.com/#!/mami2jcn/status/22340201951002624

  21. My health goals for the new year: more running fast (sub-5 mile), less snacking late (nothing huge past midnight), and a concentrated effort to make time for friends and family no matter how busy I get!

  22. I am not going to buy candy. If I don’t buy it, it can’t be eaten. Also, I’m going to set a daily calorie goal and stick to it.

  23. P.S. Also tweeted! https://twitter.com/#!/poemsaboutfood/status/22343218536382464

  24. I plan on walking my new dog for at least 30 minutes a day. No 5 minute walks for me!!

  25. I’m trying to eliminate late night snacking!

  26. I am focusing on eating clean food as much as posssible – not a diet, but a lifestyle change. Sticking to the workout plan and cutting out diet sodas are high on the list as well!

  27. I am going to try to do some exercise everyday even if it is just 10 pushups, it’s better than none!

  28. I’m always pretty careful about what I eat and I exercise daily, so I plan to keep up my healthy lifestyle for 2011!

  29. My plans are to eat healthier, smaller portions and to move more in 2011.

  30. I’m going to try to be healthier by cutting back on sweets and by eating more fruits and veggies.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  31. I am going to try and get better at cardio in the winter. I live in MN and outside exercise can be a chore in the winter. I need to either suck it up and walk outside or learn to deal with the extremely boring machines at the gym!

  32. To be healthier in 2011, I plan to drink more water (less diet soda!) and spice up my workout routine a little more. I find that I’m getting in a rut. But I could use this visa card to try a few classes at the local gym! :-)

  33. I tweeted!

  34. I’m trying to eat out less, and cook meals at home more often. (I love to cook, but sometimes with my busy schedule, I find myself ordering takeout at the end of the day because it feels easier.) To help accomplish this, I’m trying to plan all my meals in advance. I know that when I cook my own food, I generally eat healthier than when I eat out!

  35. My goal is to work out at least 3 times a week.

  36. Tweeted this! https://twitter.com/#!/katiehmiller/status/22363510952435712

  37. My new year’s resolution is to stop eating in the car as much as possible! That in and of itself will be hugely stress reducing. Wish me luck!

  38. This year I plan to focus on moving more. Since becoming a grad student, I spend the majority of my time sitting- reading, writing, in class. I’d like to find a way to integrate movement into my work time, maybe more walking while reading, or finding a stationary bike so that I can read while pedaling.

  39. Start C25K.

  40. Plan to be more active…put my gym membership to good use!

  41. I plan to walk more and drink more water! tracietrump@yahoo.com

  42. My resolution this year is to just be happy.

  43. retweet ! https://twitter.com/mckenziecm

  44. Great giveaway, Ali!
I’ve resolved to getting out to walk with my dog every day. It’ll be great for both of us. : )

  45. To be healthier overall and run that elusive 5k

  46. I plan to lose weight this year as always but this year I will actually do it I need to look good in my wedding dress !!!

  47. We’re going to work on eating healthier, drinking less pop and more water, and trying to get out and do some form of exercise at least once a day.

  48. I just joined weight watchers and my husband and I are look at body devices like the Body Bugg to help us be more informed about how many calories we burn.

  49. We are focusing on healthy cooking and eating! I feel so much better when I am more careful about what I eat. I also want to run more this year!

  50. my goal is to make it to the gym one more day a week. right now I’d say I’m heading there about 1.5 to 2 times. Or maybe I’d better say 3 times every 2 weeks. I’d like to consistently make it 5 times every 2 weeks.
