Training for the 3-Day (60 mile) Walk for Breast Cancer!

That’s right! I’m excited to announce that this first giveaway of the year is actually sponsored by Reebok, who has actually just released a sweet new line of EasyTone shoes and apparel (check it here), and are encouraging everyone to share their own ideas for making ’11 a healthier new year. I admit that I’ve never been great with New Year’s resolutions (case in point — hoped last year to learn to crochet/knit, but all I have to show for it is half of a potholder!! :S), but I do have a few hopes of my own for this year…

My main goal is to get a little more disciplined with strength training. As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of walking (partly because of the health benefits, partly because I find it a natural and therapeutic form of exercise, and partly because I’ve now recruited a bunch of friends to be walking buddies) — usually log at least 3-4 miles/day.

Unfortunately, I’m pretty inconsistent with anything beyond that. But I know that strength training is the key to just about everything, and my personal trainer friends tell me that even 5 minutes a day can make a huge difference. So, ahem – hear me now. My hope for the year is 5 minutes less a day staring at a computer, and at least 5 simple minutes getting stronger. Whoo! :)

What about you? What area of health and wellness is your focus area for this year? Is it some sort of physical exercise? Healthier eating habits? Seeking a little less stress and mental wellness?

  1. to take a page from your book, so to speak, my big push for 2011 is healthier eating. My daughter is already watching my salt intake (big weakness of mine) to the point I feel like a drug addict sneaking drugs. More fresh fruits and veggies.

  2. I plan to make more of my own desserts and stop eating those highly processed ones!

  3. I started running in July 2010. I ran my first 5K in November. After 28 years of thinking I hated to run, I discovered that it was rewarding, way easier than I thought, and even… fun!

In 2011, I’m stepping up my running game. I’m registered for a 5 Mile race in Feb. and a 10 mile race in May; I’m aiming for the Philadelphia Half Marathon next fall.

And I also hope to add strength training to my running – I’ll need to build up muscle to make it during those long runs this year!

  4. I am training for a 10 mile race in 2011 and working to try to add in yoga to my routines too.

  5. i have already started a bit before 2011 with eating more fruits/vegetables and taking my vitamins- feel so much healthier already! I’d like to do more Yoga :)

  6. This might sound odd, but drinking more herbal tea is my health goal. There are a lot of health benefits & it’s easier on the stomach than coffee. The loose teas from Teavana are my favorites!

  7. Drink more water and run more regularly. :)

  8. I plan to do more yoga and jogging.

  13. Hi Ali,
Thanks for another fun give-away! My resolution is to use my cookbooks (and of course bookmarked recipes from Gimme Some Oven) at least once per week to curb my aimless wanders through the grocery store and ensure I plan healthier meals.

  14. I am going to try to exercise more and eat better. Also to cut back on the amount of soda that I drink.

  15. i hope to be more active, either walking or jogging

  16. I definately need to stress less and learn to rest and relax a little more.

  17. I definitely want to work to cut my self some slack this year. Stress has taken over my life for to long…It’s time to take it back!!

  18. My focus this year is-eating less.

  19. I plan on extending my daily workout from thirty minutes to an hour!

  20. I’m on the “wedding workout plan” for 2011. More excerise is my goal!

  22. I’m going to take a more holistic approach to health this year: improve the mind and spirit. My goal is more consistent quiet times, and times of rest. Less TV, more reading.

  23. I want to eat balanced portions come mealtime in 2011. Down with overeating!

  25. I am trying to eat a breakfast bar for breakfast, a slim fast for lunch & then a healthy meal for dinner. I also plan to walk during my lunch break, whenever the weather gets warmer.

  26. I will be working with my physical therapist to try to increase my daily exercises.

  27. I eat fairly healthy, so this year I need to be more active. I bought a Groupon for hot yoga and got a gift certificate for TaeKwonDo. So, I’m set for a few months at least! Hopefully that will be some motivation to get moving.

  29. I plan to do the NYC marathon… stick to my eating healthy plan and moderation for the cravings!! Good luck to you… and I can’t wait to check out the shoes…

  30. Less stress would always be nice!

  31. To stay away from refined sugar. I know it is not practical to say I will never eat a sweet again, but if I can refrain as much as possible that would be great!

  32. Since I work out as much as I can, now it’s time to eat healthier – cutting back on sodium and lower fat intake, but without affecting flavor…is that possible? Will give it a try.

  33. I am going to try new things for excercise – different classes, videos, etc… to keep things interesting and keep myself motivated!

  34. My health goal this year is to try being mindful when eating. Too often I sit at the computer and with the mouse in one hand, the other is holding a cookie or digging into a bag of chips. If I was aware and mindful of my eating then I’d probably enjoy the food better and eat less which would help boost my overall health.

  35. Well, my brand new treadmill was just shipped to me last week. So I am excited to start using it. Hopefully I will be able to burn some calories, lose a few pounds, and tone up my body in 2011.

  36. This summer, after watching an interview with Michael Pollan (author of “Food Rules”) I decided to follow his advice and eat healthier foods. It has been a challenge for me and I’m still not there yet, but it has definitely impacted decisions I make at the grocery store. This year, my husband and I got P90X for Christmas and are starting today! I have a titanium rod in my leg and am somewhat limited in my exercise options, so I’m looking forward to this (although tomorrow I may be singing a different tune!) because while it is intense, it is supposed to be relatively low-impact so I think I can swing it! Like everyone else I know, I want to make healthier habits – and losing a few pounds along the way will only be an added perk! I’m making the chicken almond pasta bake from this website tonight for dinner, and then it’s off to the races! (p.s. Thanks for the tip on the Reebok shoes! I work as a behavior specialist in a middle school and am on my feet all day, so those might come in handy as I’m working toward being healthier/more fit!)

  37. I plan to make 2011 a healthier year by cutting back on sugar as much as possible. It’s ruining my life!

  38. My husband and I need to forget the drive thru. I am pledging to cook every.single.night. 5 days in and so far, so good, hehe!

  39. I tweeted, @meganspaperie, https://twitter.com/#!/meganspaperie/status/22770155465474049

    kport207 at gmail dot com

    THanks so much.

  46. Exercise & Enjoy Life More!

  47. To drink only water…that is it. No more diet coke!

  48. continue keeping a bottle of water with me constantly. continue yoga and pilates classes, cardio makes you hungry afterwards. less worrying about what i’ve eaten, because when you allow yourself to have anything you want, you want it less. put healthier foods into my body in order to be a better me. :)
