Banana Chai Smoothie -- quick and easy to make, packed with protein, and wonderfully delicious! | gimmesomeoven.comThis post is sponsored by Blue Diamond Almond Breeze. My favorite. :)

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

First off, just wanted to thank you for the kind comments and emails (and remedy suggestions!) you sent me after Monday’s post. So helpful and encouraging — thank you! I’ve been on pretty much a liquid diet for four days, but finally think that things are turning and corner and I’m on the mend. Whew, which makes me thankful for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that chips and salsa are an absolutely essential food group for me. Coming soon, I hope.

That said, I’ve been tapping into my arsenal of gentle soups and smoothie recipes this week. And as much as I love chewing, I forget how much I really do love a good protein smoothie cup of chai. But then I realized, why choose when you can have both?!

Seriously, I make matcha lattes and smoothies all the time. But it wasn’t until last week that I realized I could just as easily empty a chai tea bag out into my blender as well! Brilliant! And also, absolutely delicious, especially when paired with this easy, protein-packed banana smoothie base.

It’s a breakfast match made in heaven.

The ingredients for this one are quite simple, and also happen to be naturally gluten-free as well. (Feel free to nix the yogurt and add in a little more almond milk, too, if you’d like it to be vegan.)  Just gather up:

  • fresh bananas (then peel, slice and freeze them)
  • Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almondmilk (my fav rich and creamy almondmilk)
  • plain non-fat Greek yogurt
  • chai tea leaves (I just emptied out a tea bag or two)
  • vanilla extract
  • ground cinnamon
  • plus a little maple syrup, if you’d like an even sweeter smoothie (I didn’t think it needed it)

…and then this beauty will be yours to enjoy.

It’s naturally wonderful sweet and rich, the Greek yogurt gives it a mega boost of protein, and the chai and other seasonings give it a warm hint of spice that I absolutely loved. Just what the doctor ordered.

Enjoy!

  13. gimme more of that smoooooothie babe

  14. I have tried creating a tea concentrate that then has to be cooled before adding my smoothie, but this looks so much easier and richer in flavor! I will definitely be adding this to the list of smoothies I want to try soon!

  15. Perfet coctail after fitness :)

  16. Lovely recipe!!! Got to ask you though – since I don’t like chai leaves at all, can I replace this ingredient with some other tea type without ruining the original taste of this smoothie? How about adding some linden tea instead?

    • Hi there! Hmmm, do we’re not sure about Linden tea, as we haven’t tried that, but Earl Grey might work well!

  17. I’d never thought of emptying a tea bag to use in cooking–that’s such a great idea! My favorite chai is Celestial Teahouse’s Dirty Chai (chai + espresso), and I bet it would be amazing in this!

    Thanks! :)

  18. Can you use chai seeds

    • We’re not sure about chai seeds, but we just empty out the contents of the chai tea bags (to use the leaves), and that works great. We hope you enjoy this!

  19. This banana smoothie sure to be my favorite.  I love blue diamond  almond milk unsweetened.  Thanks so easy and quick to make.

  20. Wow!!! At first it had a strong flavor but it is seriously a great idea! I just made one and it is very tasty :) thank you !

  21. Ohhhh my gosh! GENIUS! I am so happy to have stumbled upon this receipe and am SO excited to have this for breakfast in the morning! :D

  22. Just made this …. It was delicious!  Do you have any nutrition info like calories, fat etc?

    • We’re glad to hear you enjoyed it Debbie! Unfortunately though we aren’t sure of the nutrition facts/amount of calories in this recipe. We currently are not publishing nutrition facts on the site, as the nutrition calculators available are not 100% accurate, and we never want to publish anything that might be misleading. However, a lot of our readers love the My Fitness Pal nutrition calculator, so feel free to try that for an estimate. We hope that helps!

  23. Great recipe and maybe even better pictures. We have a similar recipe on our site but the pictures aren’t nearly as good.!

  24. I made this twice now and love love love it!!!

  25. Not that it matters much but thought it’d be nice to let everyone know that the word chai = tea and the spices/flavors everyone associates with “chai” is called masala. So Masala Chai is spiced/flavored tea. If you say chai tea your are really saying tea tea.

  26. very thick but delicious. definitely, will make this again.

  27. I have trouble finding smoothies that I actually like. This one is very yummy! I have made this twice. One was per the recipe and it was very good but too spicy for me, so next time I brewed a cup of tea and replaced 1/2 cup of the almond milk with the 1/2 cup of brewed tea. I also added a teaspoon of honey.

  28. Thanks for the great recipe! I made a few alterations to make it with what I had available in the house, but I really enjoyed it!

  29. Drinking now, so so good! I love banana and chai. Such a good idea to mix the two! I did mix in chai spices I had on hand (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves) instead of chai tea leaves. I also mixed in a handful of cashews. No yogurt, but I did add the maple syrup. (I made this on a whim, so I just used ingredients I had lying around.)

  30. Hello!! Excited to try this recipe – do you think Vanilla Soy Milk could work (in place of Almond Milk)?

    Thank you!

  31. You could brew the chai tea, freeze in ice cube tray, and use those in the smoothie…

  32. I was skeptical about dumping a chai bag into a smoothie but this was perfect! I added some vegan vanilla protein powder instead of vanilla and sweetener and it complimented it beautifully.

  33. SO GOOD! I started with half a chai tea bag and it was perfect!

  34. So good. I love spicy chai so this was right up my alley. I used Trader Joe’s Vanilla Almond Spiced Chai smoothie as the base instead of almond milk, and did not add the yogurt or the cinnamon or vanilla. I used Pukka’s vanilla chai herbal tea.
