Cake Batter Rice Crispy Treats

Just when I thought I had tried every rice crispy treat recipe under the sun….this recipe shows up on StumbleUpon.

I may or may not have immediately run to the store to by a cake mix to make it.

And…had a little too much fun playing with those gorgeous, colorful sprinkles.

And…enjoyed every single, glorious, hint-of-cake-batter-flavored bite.

And…shared the rest with friends so that I didn’t eat too many bites.

And…now I share it with all of you.

And…you should make some.

:)

Description

You will love this bright and colorful cake batter rice crispy treats recipe! Great for special occasions!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 (10 oz.) bag of mini-marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup yellow cake mix (the dry cake mix, not prepared into a batter!)
  • 5 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 1 (1.75 oz.) container of sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat and add marshmallows. Stir until they begin to melt, then remove from heat. Whisk in the (dry) cake mix, then stir in cereal so it is completely coated with marshmallow mixture. Sprinkle in half of the sprinkles and briefly stir. (Don’t stir too much or the sprinkles will bleed out their color.) Press the mixture into a baking dish (any size will do) and top with remaining sprinkles. Let sit for about 30 minutes before cutting. I find spraying a knife with nonstick spray helps to cut them cleanly.
  2. *Disclaimer: You consume dry cake mix at your own risk.*

  3. Sounds delicious! I am having friends over for dinner this weekend and will be making this for dessert. I already bought the ingredients!

  4. I don’t understand the point of this; it’s just the usual rice crispy treat recipe with the dry mix added. Why?

  5. Today is the 2nd time I’m making these. I’m taking them down to our spot along the Mardi Gras parade route! So good!

  6. I made them, they are delicious!

  7. Lucieth,
To some of us that like to change things up this gives the rice krispy treats a completely different taste which if you read the other comments others seem to really love them. What I don’t understand is how you can’t see that they are different, Why? Do you ever try changing a recipe up for a new taste, do you always challenge someone when they try something new?

  8. If you have to ask why, then you obviously have not tasted these delightful yummy treats! Give them a try and you will see for yourself….you will NEVER go back to plain rice krispie treats again! Thank you so much for posting…love them!

  9. You can make cake batter pancakes.

    My kiddo LOVES them!

  10. Making these for daughters Valentine’s party with Valentine’s funfetti mix. Also bought red and pink glitter gel to decorate.

  12. Just made these and they are delicious! I don’t think I will ever make the original version again. Thanks for sharing!!!

  13. Has anyone tried chocolate cake mix.

  14. this also tastes delicious with a white chocolate base…. yummy :)

  15. Remaining cake mix? You should never have any remaining. Just make more treats. lol

  16. Could you not just use the FunFetti cake mix???

  17. Ok.. just made these… mine are like extremely hard! Why? They aren’t like typical rice krispie treats… bummed

  18. Made these tonight for a youth group event at church tomorrow and LOVE “EM!!!!!! Didn’t really want to do the sprinkles so 1 batch I added chopped up Reese’s Pieces and the other batch I added 1/4 c PB to the marshmallows & cake mix and mini choco chips & crushed pretzels to the cereal. Delicious!! My new favorite Rice Krispie Treats :) THank you!!!

  19. these would be really good if you rolled them into balls and dipped them in to chocolate and let them harden with sprinkles on them

  20. This sounds delicious,i remember my mom making the regular rice crispy’s and we loved them,i think i will have to make these for my granddaughters.

  21. Just made these! Can’t wait to try!! My question is- I tried using your cake ball recipe but after I measured and baked everything, they’re more like fluffy half burnt flat cake cookies. Should I have used more cake mix? I still have a good amount of cake mix left, so I’d love to know how to make the cake balls the proper way! Thanks!

  22. I used a 16 oz bag of marshmallows, 7 TB butter, 1/2 c cake batter, and the entire 12 oz box of Rice Krispies. patted into a lg 11×17 lasagna pan. Yum Yum. thanks for the original recipe!!

  23. These are great!! My mom even liked them and she has been making rice kris pie treats for years. nice alternative to the usual.

  24. It looks delicious! Anyone knows if it’s possible to change the butter with oil in order to make them milk and gluten free?

  25. Being a chocolate lover, how about choc marshmallows, cocoa crispies, dark choc cake mix, and choc sprinkles and/or those tiny pastel disks?

  26. I wonder how they would be with plain or chocolate crisp rice cereal and chocolate cake mix? Hmmmmm

  27. These look SOOOOO delicious!!! I’ll have to make them

  28. I just made these and saying they were hard is a understatement !! So bummed. Have no idea what happened ?

  29. Just made these and the kids loved them! Easy tip when spreading out the treats-put a ziploc bag over your hand, spray with cooking spray and press treats into pan. A lot easier than a spatula :) ENJOY!

  30. Love the flavor of these, but they turned out rock hard. Very difficult for the kids to eat once cooled. I did up a 1/3 cut of cake mix. Any suggestions to soften them so they don’t get so hard? More butter or maybe less rice crispies? I welcome any comments.

  31. I used 1/2 cup of cake mix and it just wasnt enough! i couldnt tast it, next time i might try a cup, hopefully its not too much!

  32. Man, these are great. I also used 1/3 cup of cake mix. I have a vacuum seal so I just sealed up the left over cake mix until I make these again, which will be very soon!
To those of you that are getting hard treats. One, make sure your ingredients are fresh and two, do not over cook the marshmallows. The longer you cook them, the harder they turn out. And stir often. Enjoy!

  33. I use a pizza cutter to cut my rice krispies treats…and if you wet your hands before pushing them into the pan, they don’t stick to the treats so its easier to spread them.

  34. Made these and they were AWESOME. I used 1/2 c of cake mix and 4 Tbsp butter. 5 of us polished them off straight away!

  35. I saw another recipe for these same treats that includes vanilla. Maybe that’s why they came out hard ?

  36. Mine turned out extremely hard and I followed your instructions and recipe completely! How can I soften them? My toddler couldn’t eat them they were so hard :( also could I substitute marshmallow creme rather than the marshmallows?

  37. These are so good. I made them tonight for my roommates and they are finishing the last one right now. Great idea!

  38. Another suggestion for the left over cake mix….add some plain yogurt and cool whip to it and make cake batter dip. Eat with graham crackers, chocolate wafers. your finger!!..I’m addicted to the stuff. I can’t wait to try these treats.

  39. I grew up eating rice krispy treats made w/peanut butter added, then topped w/a mixture of choc chips, butterscotch chips, and more peanut butter melted (you stir together in a double boiler). Man was I ever surprised people really ate those plain old rice krispies. But to add cake batter to them, now that might work for me. Can’t wait to give these a try.

  40. OMG Love this! I’m going to try it out tomorrow!

  41. just made this with sugar free cake mix. AMAZING!!!!!!!! thank you.

  42. I loved these but will be using about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of cake mix as even with 1/3 I couldn’t taste it too much. (Maybe different mixes make a difference.)

Ashley – to soften them just stick them in the microwave on a paper towel. I did a small chunk, maybe 4×4 for 10 seconds and it worked perfectly. :)

  43. Discovered this recipe on Pinterest and made these for Easter and they were a HUGE hit!!! Disappeared in minutes, and that is with me eating a 1/4 of the pan. I love rice crispy treats and now I love them even more and this will be the only way I make them here on out!

Thank you so much for sharing!

  44. U could add the remaining cake mix to a sm package of cool whip, add 4tbls of lemon juice, 1 egg and mix into a dough. Dough will be gooey.! Scoop out into small balls, “iceream scoop works the best.” drop into xxx sugar toss and bake at 350 for 8-9 minutes, cookies will be soft but will harden slightly upon cooling.! works with all kinds of cake mixes . 1 package of cake mix, 1 egg, 1 sm pk of coolwhip, 2 cups of xxx for tossing. the missing 1/4 cup of cake mix wont b missed for these cookies.

  45. Oooh yum that looks good! Perfect for little kids parties, and girly nights in.

  46. I made some puppy chow like this….
was very good can’t wait to try these!:)

  47. I just made these and they are great…has a similar flavor to birthday cake ice cream. My friend tried them and she’s not really into sweets and she loved them.

  48. I made these with gluten free rice krispies and 1/4 cup gluten free cake mix. I think increasing the amount of batter as there wasn’t a wow of taste. I did add some pure vanilla as well. I usually make the treats in the microwave but couldn’t find a cake batter recipe made that way, but will try it next time! The Florida heat made the kitchen hot with these on the stovetop and dinner in the oven. These taste good as do plain treats and I can’t stop eating them.

  49. We don’t bake these right?

  50. I made these and I added mini m&m’s to the mix because I love chocolate so much I feel that every treat needs some in it. They were delicious!
