This Cilantro Lime Slaw recipe is easy to make in just 10 minutes, it tastes extra fresh and light, and it can work great as a zesty side dish or as a topping for tacos, burgers, sandwiches and more.

Cilantro Lime Slaw

Guys, I’ve got the yummiest fish taco recipe comin’ your way tomorrow.

But first — we’ve gotta talk about this coleslaw. ♡

It’s my go-to, back-pocket, easy-breezy, fresh-and-flavorful cilantro lime slaw recipe that I’ve made for years, and it somehow magically goes with just about everything. I make it most often just as a simple side dish when we’re grilling out in the summertime, especially anytime that BBQ sauce or Mexican food are involved. But it’s also fantastic served as a topping on pretty much any kind of tacos — fish, shrimp, carnitas, sofritas, barbacoa, chicken, you name it. It also works great as a topping for burgers or sandwiches, or mixed into buddah bowls or burrito bowls. Or hey — if you want to maybe add a protein and avocado in there too — this slaw can easily be transformed into an entree just like that.

Mostly though, I just love this cilantro lime slaw because it tastes super light and healthy, and it’s a breeze to make. Just pick up a bag of coleslaw mix at the store (or shred some cabbage and carrots and make your own from scratch). Pop a handful of simple ingredients to the blender to make the sauce. Toss everything together and then — voila! — the most delicious, creamy, tangy coleslaw can be ready to go in less than 10 minutes.

Let’s make some!

Mexican Coleslaw Dressing Ingredients

Cilantro Lime Slaw Ingredients:

To make this recipe, you will need the following cilantro lime coleslaw ingredients:

  • Coleslaw mix: To make this recipe extra quick and easy, I recommend just picking up a bag of coleslaw mix at the store. Or you’re welcome to just shred some cabbage and carrots and make your own homemade coleslaw mix.
  • Greek yogurt: I like to make this slaw with (full-fat) plain Greek yogurt. But you are welcome to use mayo (or a 50/50 split with mayo) if you prefer. Or mix in some sour cream for an even tangier slaw.
  • Fresh cilantro: We will add lots to the coleslaw dressing, but feel free to also stir in some (larger) chopped cilantro leaves to the finished slaw too.
  • Green onions: We will just add the green parts.
  • Lime juice: Freshly-squeezed, please.
  • Garlic: A few cloves of fresh garlic. Or you can sub in a teaspoon of garlic powder.
  • Seasonings: Just salt, pepper and cumin.
  • (Optional) Jalapeño or Serrano Pepper: I love adding in a seeded chile pepper for a little extra heat. Or, if you would like a significantly spicier slaw, leave in the seeds. :)

How To Make Coleslaw

How To Make Coleslaw:

To make this easy coleslaw recipe, simply…

  1. Make the coleslaw dressing: Combine the Greek yogurt, cilantro, lime juice, cumin, salt, pepper, jalapeño (if using), green onions and garlic in a blender or food processor, and pulse briefly until the mixture is combined. (Or alternately, if you would rather not use a blender to make the coleslaw dressing recipe, you can just finely-chop the ingredients and then stir everything together.)
  2. Toss everything together. In a large bowl, toss the coleslaw mix with the dressing until combined.
  3. Serve.  Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to 1 day.

Possible Variations:

Want to mix things up with this homemade coleslaw recipe? Feel free to:

  • Use a different creamy base: If you love a good mayo-based coleslaw, feel free to use mayo in place of Greek yogurt, or do a 50/50 blend. Or for an even tangier slaw, feel free to use sour cream in place of Greek yogurt, or do a 50/50 blend.
  • Make it sweeter: For a slightly sweeter slaw, feel free to mix 1-2 tablespoons of honey into the coleslaw dressing.
  • Make it smokier: For a smokier slaw, add 1 chipotle pepper in adobe sauce to the dressing. (It’s so good!!)
  • Add avocado: Adding in some avocado is always a good idea. ;)
  • Add extra veggies: If you would like to gussy up the coleslaw mix with extra veggies, feel free to add in some thinly-sliced bell peppers, red onions, jicama, and/or radishes.
  • Add nuts: For some extra crunch, try adding a handful of pepitas or sunflower seeds to this slaw too!

Ways To Serve This Coleslaw:

As I mentioned above, this cilantro lime slaw recipe can be served any number of ways! Some of my favorites include…

  • Easy side dish: This slaw tastes great on its own as an easy side dish, especially with Mexican or Thai food, or when served with any kind of grilled meats or veggies.
  • Fish tacos: I most often make some form of this slaw to serve on fish tacos. (Stay tuned for a new recipe tomorrow!)
  • Burgers/BBQ/etc: This slaw works great as a topping for burgers, bbq sandwiches, sloppy joes, and many other kinds of sandwiches/slider.

Description

This Cilantro Lime Slaw recipe is easy to make in just 10 minutes, it tastes extra fresh and light, and it can work great as a zesty side dish or as a topping for tacos, burgers, sandwiches and more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt*
  • 1/2 cup tightly-packed fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup freshly-squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly-cracked black pepper
  • 3 green onions (just the green parts)
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • (optional) 1 jalapeño or serrano pepper, stemmed and cored
  • 1 (14-ounce) bag cole slaw mix* (about 78 cups)

Instructions

  1. Combine the Greek yogurt, cilantro, lime juice, cumin, salt, black pepper, green onions, garlic and jalapeño (if using) in a blender or food processor*.  Pulse briefly a few times until the mixtures is combined.
  2. Place the cole slaw mix in a large mixing bowl.  Drizzle the sauce on top of the cole slaw, then toss until the mixture is evenly combined.  Season with extra pepper and/or lime juice if needed.
  3. Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

Notes

*Greek yogurt: I used plain full-fat Greek yogurt for this recipe.  But if you prefer a mayo-based slaw, you are welcome to use mayo instead, or a 50/50 blend.  Or you could do a blend with sour cream if you would like an even tangier slaw.

*Cole slaw mix: If you would like to make homemade cole slaw mix, just combine about 7 cups of shredded cabbage (green, red, or a mix) and 1 cup of shredded carrots.

*Skip The Blender: If you would like to skip the blender/food processor step, you’re also welcome to make this coleslaw dressing recipe entirely by hand.  Just finely chop the cilantro, jalapeño (if using), green onions and garlic, and whisk them all together with the other dressing ingredients until combined.

  1. Made this tonight and it was so good! We put it on barbecue chicken sandwiches! I can’t wait to try it on tacos — I’ve tried to make something similar before and it always felt like it was missing something, but this recipe will be perfect!

  2. So vibrant!!! Great recipe, can’t wait to try :)

  3. Hi Ali! I had fun cruising around your website/blog page. Your recipe for Cilantro Lime Slaw caught my eye. I had everything on hand except the cole slaw mix and our friendly grocery just down the street fixed me right up. We have an herb garden down behind our condo, so all the cilantro I wanted was readily available. This was fun to make and everyone enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Loved it! I’ve tried all different kinds of slaws, but I’d say this is my favourite so far. I used the traditional Greek yogurt version, and added both the optional jalapeno and radish, and it is zesty!

  5. I’m always looking for the perfect coleslaw and I think I’ve found it with this one! Having it today Fourth of July with bbq ribs and chicken. Can’t wait to try it with your fish taco recipe.

  6. The sauce on this slaw is dynamite! I definitely recommend adding the jalapeno. I have even been using the sauce as a kind of crema on top of fish tacos along with a little pico de gallo. Yumalicious!

  7. I tried this last night and both my hubby and I thought that it was not good. I do not know what was missing or we could have done differently. I believe it needs mayo.

  8. This looks yummy. I am going to make it with broccoli slaw mix as a side with fish tacos.

  9. This kind of thing is just what my fish tacos have been missing! Except… I’m one of those weirdos that thinks cilantro tastes like soap. Have you tried other herbs, maybe parsley, with any success?

  10. How do you remove the taste of the preserving liquid (what Clorox would taste like to me) that is used with these packaged salad ingredients? It ruins them for me.

This recipe looks wonderful to me and I will use it, just not with packaged slaw.

    • Hi there. I would suggest making it from scratch. Use a mandolin to julienne the carrot and cabbage, or slice it nice and thin with a chefs knife. I did the former and it is oh so bright, refreshing and delicious!

    • I’m not much of a fan of packaged slaw mixes for that reason. I always put the slaw in a large bowl of water and let it soak for al least an hour before using. That freshens the slaw and rinses off that taste. Good luck!

  11. Amazing recipe everyone in my family loved it, even my teenager had seconds!! Thanks a lot

  12. Pinch of sugar,50 mayo 50 yougut. Delicious.

  13. Love this recipe! Will definitely use again!

  14. Thank you for a great recipe! I did tweak it a bit by using half mayo/half sour cream and added a few tablespoons of honey for balance. It was wonderful on pork carnitas tacos – a keeper for sure!

  15. I have just printed out your recipes for the Cilantro Lime Slaw, homemade Flour Tortillas and Shrimp Tacos. Can’t wait to find some good Gulf shrimp to chow down with these recipes.
What I love so much about your recipes are the Variations that you list below most of them – very refreshing to see what you can change up and how to do it.

  16. I had some cabbage to use up and was making shrimp fajitas. Saw this recipe and had all the ingredients. I used half mayo and half greek yogurt. So good, everyone liked it. A new favorite.

  17. Delicious

  18. tried this last night – delicious!

  19. Delicious!

  20. My husband loved it and the crema is? with chipotle pepper!!! Thank you for sharing?

  21. Tried this recipe tonight and we loved it!

  22. This was to die for! I made it according to the recipe, opting for the 50/50 yogurt and mayo option without the jalapeño. It was so delicious and paired perfectly with BBQ chicken. Such a nice fresh change from the same old cole slaw. I will definitely make it again and again!

  23. Made this tonight to go with some pork loin…the dressing is amazing :) I cut it in half though…just to see if I liked it. (should have made the whole amount and could easily use it on other things :) I did half mayo and half sour cream since I didn’t have any yogurt and it was great :) I love that it wasn’t all sweet and sugary!
    Thank you for sharing!

  24. A long way, you can finish step by step, and then you can’t reach without a foot

  25. Is there a reason why you use the full fat Greek yogurt as opposed to the fat free?

  26. Yes! This is delish and requested at least once a week in this house ❤️ I’ve also added a ripe smashed avocado to this and it’s amazing!

  27. I really wanted to love this, but there was something very bitter tasting about it. I read in one of the comments that sometimes packaged slaw has a funny taste. I don’t usually use it, but did this time. Could that have been it? I followed the recipe exactly, minus the jalapeños.

  28. Amazing flavor. Made it with vegan mayo and added jalapeno. Love this with tacos or even just a side. Recipe saved!

  29. This turned out great! Even my pick 11-year old liked it. We put it on shrimp tacos and it gave them so much flavor. Thanks for this recipe!

  30. I made this as a topping for carnitas tacos and after the first bite my friend asked family said “I’m gonna want like 5 more tacos, please!”

I added shredded radishes and since I ran out of cumin I added chipotle powder. It was delicious. Going to try it again with BBQ pulled pork sandwiches. Thanks for always having amazing recipes!

  31. This recipe is perfect! The sauce alone is the absolute star of this recipe! It was a hit in my house and devoured! I had some orange bell pepper and cucumber I needed to use, so I grated the cucumber into the cabbage mix and then did a fine side of the orange pepper. Wow! Paired perfectly with our fish tacos. Will definitely be making this OVER and OVER! ?

  32. Delicious with salmon burgers too!

  33. Excellent

  34. Loved this recipe- thanks

  35. Pared this slaw with Carnitas to make an amazing dinner. Did not have an yogurt so used half Mayo and half Sour Cream. Perfect salad for on any tortilla. Thank you

  36. This was soooo good! I followed this recipe and used it to make a variation of the shrimp tacos! Absolutely delicious!

  37. In a cup, I used about 1/2 non-fat Greek yogurt, most of the rest of the cup of mayo (Duke’s) and toped it off with Daisy sour cream. Used seeded jalapeno. Turned out wonderful!

  38. Super yummy! I had to make some adjustments due to what I had on hand. I used half cup mayo and half cup (plus a little more) of sour cream. My tastebuds are a bit sensitive to salt and lime so I cut those in half. Will be a go to recipe for sure!

  39. This was AMAZING with fish tacos tonight, thank you so much!

  40. Made the Shrimp Taco tonight with the homemade tortilla and Cilantro Lime Slaw. I used white whole wheat flour. Never again will I use store bought tortillas .The homemade ones are so uch better. For the Cilantro Lime Slaw will use a 50/50 mix Greek Yougurt and mayo next time since my husband wasn’t too fond of the plain yougurt dressing. The shrimp taco, homemade tacos and Cilantro Lime Slaw recioes are keepers. Thank you so much for the delicious recipe.

  41. I made this earlier today for tonight’s fish tacos. I used an 11% Greek yogurt and sour cream mix. The dressing is so delicious. Just fresh, fresh, fresh tasting! Definitely a keeper

  42. This was delicious. I didn’t have the green onions or the jalapeños, and it was still really tasty.

  43. Made this tonight to serve with grilled skirt steak and baby potatoes in brava sauce. It might’ve been the slaw mix I had, but next time I’m going to let this sit overnight to get the flavors marinated just a tad more. The dressing was delicious! Blender was definitely the way to go. I feel like it developed the flavors more because the cilantro was cut into the yogurt and lime juice.

  44. I make this as soon as the weather is nice!!! It is a go to with shrimp tacos during lent. Love it

  45. Delicious slaw!!! We made it to go with homemade nachos. It was a hit!

  46. I made this the other day and realized immediately that this was what my tacos have been missing! I’ve tried some variations on thinned out sour cream with cilantro and lime drizzled on my other toppings but this was really the perfect compliment. Cool, crisp, and delicious.

I used a chopped salad mix containing a similar mix to coleslaw because I had it on hand. My dressing, however, turned everything a bright neon green because of the cilantro. Maybe I overdressed it? Doesn’t matter that much – I’ll be making this again.

  47. I know it says yields 4-6 servings, is the normal serving a half a cup? quarter of a cup?

  48. Made the quickest, easiest dinner that was a hit with the whole family! Street taco tortillas, threw fish sticks in the oven, this amazing slaw, avocado slices, and cilantro lime sauce. Yum!

  49. Very tasty! Perfect complement to our Cinco de Mayo shrimp tacos!

  50. I made this slaw tonight after my mouth watered while reading all of the wonderful comments, thank you All “Y’all ” I’m up at 3 in the morning here to make sure the slaw sets well before dinner. I really hope it makes it to dinner, hello…. yummy stuff folks. I made mine with 50% Froyo greek whole yogurt , 50% Hellman’s Mayo and a Jalapeño not seeded and pulpt. A few taps on the goof processor and it was perfect. I will be barbecuing pulled pork shoulder later today for carnitas. I just can’t wait. The only question I had was should I make homemade corn or floir tortillas
