Here is a tutorial on how to make your own wood text art! | www.gimmesomestyleblog.com #diy #silhouette

My mom and dad each turned 50 this past year. This is a big year for them so I wanted to make sure they really understood how much they had shaped me into who I am today and how much I appreciated their love. Last month was my mom’s birthday where I made this life lessons notebook. For my dad though, I wanted to incorporate a phrase that he had told me for years–“You make my heart smile.” This has become something he says often to me, and even on the morning of his birthday I texted him to tell him happy birthday and he sent back “you still make my heart smile!”

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Wood boards (your preference in size!)
  • Silhouette Cameo Machine
  • Paint (color of your choice!)
  • Stencil adhesive
  • Small foam paint roller or brush
  • spray polyurethane

1. Prepare your board

Originally I was planning on using some pallets that I had grabbed from behind the shop, but then my husband reminded me that we had a bunch of scrap wood from the bar we had made in Quay. I didn’t want the board to be too large since we were giving it as a gift. (Didn’t want him to feel obligated to hang a huge piece of art somewhere in his house!) So we went for a 24×17 size board that could easily be hung on the wall or placed on a shelf. We nailed the boards together with a brace on the back and then sanded down the edges and gave it a quick coat of polyurethane.

2. Make your Stencil

Have you ever used any of Silhouette’s die cut machines? The lovely people from Silhouette sent me their cameo machine to try, and let me just say that I love it! Making a stencil has never been easier! It is extremely user friendly and comes with a software that makes it so easy to get the results you are looking for. It comes with a huge selection of fonts to choose from, but also lets you use any of your own existing fonts! For my board I chose the font Wisdom Script.

After setting the size for my font and checking the paper thickness I was ready to cut!

3. Place your stencil down and paint!

After cutting out my stencil I chose to cut it apart so that the text fit on only two lines.

Once I had it lined up the way I liked best I sprayed the back of the paper with stencil spray adhesive and placed it down on the board to paint!

4. Seal the board!

After the paint is dry, peel the stencil off and seal with a couple coats of spray polyurethane. Enjoy your new art!

Happy Birthday Dad! Love you! :)
