When I was in college, I used to be able to drink coffee at all hours of the day. 7am, 2pm, 2am…my friends and I pretty much lived at the coffee shop near campus, and the caffeine never fazed me. (And I admit I was a little skeptical of my friends who “swore” coffee would keep them up if they drank it too late in the day!)

But apparently what goes around comes around. A few years ago, literally overnight it seemed like my body decided to make the switch. And I now fall into the Don’t-Let-Any-Caffeine-Near-Me-After-3pm category. (Which even includes decaf, which I swear will keep me up half of the night too!)  I know. Call it adulthood, but I’m now “that” person. :)

Regardless, for the past few years, I have now been getting acquainted with the other side of the menu at coffee shops in the afternoons and evenings. And one of my all-time favorite drinks to order in the cooler months is a classic white hot chocolate. It is my total “comfort” drink — warm, smooth, sweet but not too sweet, and chocolate-y but not too chocolate-y. And of course, it is all the better when topped with some fresh whipped cream! Mmmm.

Crazy enough, it wasn’t until recently that I tried to actually make homemade white chocolate. But now that I know how easy it is, I make it all the time. So many recipes call for heavy cream or half and half (which you are welcome to use), but you can literally make it with whatever kind of milk you’d like. Just grab a bar of your favorite white chocolate or some white chocolate chips, a pinch of vanilla extract, and you’re good to go. Simple, cheaper than your coffee shop, and wonderfully delicious. Enjoy!

Description

Delicious white hot chocolate recipe is SO easy to make homemade, and easy to make with your favorite kind of milk (or cream)!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups of milk of your choice (or you can substitute heavy cream or half and half, or do a mixture)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract, store-bought or homemade
  • 8 oz. white chocolate, chopped into small pieces (or white chocolate chips)
  • whipped cream or marshmallows for topping

Instructions

  1. Stir together milk, vanilla and chopped white chocolate in a medium saucepan.  Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the white hot chocolate comes to a simmer.  (Do not let it come to a boil.)  Remove from heat and serve immediately, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.

  5. I’ve never had white hot chocolate, but it looks absolutely divine.

I’m the same way with caffeine in the late afternoon/evenings. Can’t live with it after 3 p.m. … though I can’t live without it before that.

  6. I LOVE White Hot Chocolate!! Funnily enough I loved this more than regular hot chocolate when I was little! This sounds absolutely divine for when it eventually cools down here!

  7. This really is one of my hubby’s favorites. Cannot wait to surprise him!

  8. I’m totally that person too. White hot chocolate is a great compromise (like it’s really a compromise…) for us non-caffeine drinkers.

  15. so clever Ali! I secretly like white chocolate much more than regular chocolate… I know, i’m weird! And coffee hardly has an affect on me these days. I drink SO much of it. Not a good thing. :(

  16. Homemade hot chocolate is definitely on my to-do list for this winter, and my hubby would LOVE this white chocolate version!

  17. I still don’t feel that effected by caffeine, but I’m sure that will change at some point :) And I would LOVE this white hot chocolate no matter what. It’s so pretty!

  18. Oh wow does this sound good right about now!!

  19. Homemade white hot chocolate is the best! I like to go all out and use 10% evaporated milk. So insanely rick and delicious. Yours looks beautiful. :)

  20. This looks beyond wonderful! LOLing at the subbing in heavy cream part of your recipe. Yes, I would love to drink 8 oz of heavy cream laced with melted white choc & vanilla! I may not be able to fit in my jeans but god it would be amazing :)

  21. I love white chocolate and recently made a white hot chocolate mix… it’s one of my new favorite drinks!
    Your pictures are so tasty!

  22. Looks amazing! I’m wondering if I can make this and keep it in a large coffee urn to serve 30+ guests or if I have to make several small batches.

  23. Liquid heaven! That sounds amazing, to say the least. I have to try this in my lifetime.

  24. YUM – this looks totally delicious! I have some white chocolate which would not cooperate for melting/dipping yesterday so I can turn it into this delicious drink for friends!

  25. MMMM ça a l’air bon , peut- on les faire à l’avance ou ce n’est pas bon froid ?

  26. Bet this would be Christmas-time yummy garnished with a peppermint stick, and maybe even a little peppermint schnapps swirled in the hot white cocoa? Yummmmmmmy!

  27. Just made this and it is amazing! I used 2 % milk and white choc. chips and it taste just like starbucks!

    • did you take out the vanilla flavor? I am skeptical about there being a hint of vanilla with the recipe above.

  28. umm i put crushed candy canes im mine and it tastes just like pepperment hot chocolate from starbucks

  29. Just made this, it’s amazingggg :)

  30. I made this for our family Christmas decorating night, and it was amazing! However, it was very rich and half the family was unable to finish it. So I wondered if adding more milk would help with the sweetness or if it would just thin it out too much?

  31. This sounds so good. Thanks for sharing.

  32. Alternatively you can cut the cream in half:

    Boil water in a teakettle.
Add vanilla and chocolate to mug
Add boiled water until mug is half full, stir until chocolate melts
    Add your cream/milk
    Serve

This makes it a little less rich and you don’t need to dirty a pot

    • I just tried that and it was completely delicious. Not to mention it was so quick!(I used a microwave to boil the water…)

  33. Thanks for sharing your recipe! My son discovered this yesterday at a coffee shop and loved it! Went to the grocery store today to see if they sold just a powdered mix, and there was no such thing! They had every flavor but white chocolate. So, I purchase a large Ghirardelli White Chocolate baking bar and I am going to use your recipe tonight! I just did a quick google search and yours was the first one I clicked on! Thanks again!!

  34. I am definetly going to pin this one. I never even heard of white hot chocolate :)

  35. Thank you so much for posting this recipe. We found out in April that my 3 year old is allergic to chocolate. She has handled it really really well, but today she was talking about hot chocolate and was clearly bummed out that she couldn’t have it anymore. She asked me if I could make her some white hot chocolate, and I told her I’d look for a recipe. Can’t wait to make this for her!

  36. Made this tonight and it was AMAZING!! I’m totally obsessed with White Hot Chocolate right now, and I am so happy I found your recipe. Thanks Ali!

  37. Well you’ve killed me now with the pictures alone. I comment now from beyond the grave.

  38. I love making white hot chocolate like this, but I always make it for a crowd by using a gallon of milk and a whole bag of white chocolate chips. It is delicious!

  39. By the way, I always make it in the crock pot. Thanks for giving me a smaller recipe.

  40. I made this tonight. It was a huge hit. Thank you for this post

  41. Does this have. Caffeine in it

  42. Tried this for the first time today – absolutely love it! It was so easy to make too!

  43. Okay…I just made this for the first time – just a single-serving portion in a 6 oz. mug. I melted 2T of white chocolate chips in 1% milk, and while the flavor is definitely there I still have the oily film on the surface. I haven’t added the vanilla, but I imagine this is for flavor and not some chemistry thing. Maybe I really need richer milk for the oil to stay dissolved – ?

  44. Amazing! Being a chocoholic, i must try this!

  45. If you add a bit of peppermint flavoring it is even better!  I added some peppermint baking chips and it is wonderful!!!

  46. I recommend not putting as much white chocolate in the mixture.. Its very strong. Still delicious though, just a thought :)

  47. Yum! I added a few butterscotch and dark chocolate chips. It doesn’t look quite as pretty, but it’s still delicious.

  48. I just made this tonight for 1 portion and it is so good!! Even when I only used cheap white chocolate.
