Honey Mustard Salmon | Baked or Grilled

I don’t know if any of you have ever noticed, but this blog is majorly lacking in recipes featuring the “M” word.

Sorry guys, mustard has just never really been my thing.

But oh my goodness, this fiancé of mine absolutely loves it. When we go to McCoy’s in Kansas City for their famous soft pretzels, he happily slides the bowl of cheese sauce over to me and places the bowl of grainy mustard squarely in front of him like he won the lottery. And we happily devour both without having to share. Which — I think we’d both agree — is a fabulous win-win.

That said, I’m notorious for always being “that friend” at restaurants who kiiiind of wants to try a bite of every single thing that everyone else ordered. (R&D, right?)  And over the past two years of eating out with Barclay, I’ve probably sampled more mustard dishes than I have in the past twenty. And I think that my reluctant little tastes buds may finally be coming around, especially when a little honey is also involved in a sauce. I’ve decided it’s my gateway into mustard for now. Oh, and the grainer the better.

Progress. ;)

So this past weekend, I decided to cook my first dish for the two of us that featured the “M” word as an actual main ingredient. And I’m happy to report that we both loved it! Plus, it literally only took about 7 minutes to prep and 18 to bake (or you can pop it on the grill). Which means — you do the math — this amazing main course was ready to go in less than 30 minutes.

My kind of meal.

(Even with mustard!)

Honey Mustard Salmon with Green Beans

I mean, seriously, so gorgeous! And SO easy to make.

How To Cook Salmon with Honey Mustard Sauce

Just fire up your oven or grill. Then while it’s heating, lay out some long sheets of aluminum foil on a baking sheet. (<– You might need to use two if your foil isn’t wide enough to form a “packet” around the salmon later.)  Lay the salmon on the foil.

Then whisk together a simple honey mustard sauce using lots of whole-grain mustard, honey, garlic, lemon juice, smoked paprika, S&P. Spread it out evenly on top of the salmon. Then close your huge foil “packet” and pop the salmon into the oven (or grill) for about 15-18 minutes, until the salmon is cooked through. (I like to carefully open the packet and turn on the broiler for the final few minutes to get the top nice and toasty.)

Then sprinkle the salmon with some finely-chopped fresh parsley…

…and…SERVE!

Grilled or Baked Honey Mustard Salmon

We served ours up with some roasted green beans and some leftover arugula pasta salad I had on hand (recipe coming to the blog soon!), and absolutely loved it. But this salmon would be delicious served with any fresh green salads, roasted veggies, pasta, lentils, sauteéd greens…you name it. That sweet and savory honey-mustard sauce (I can’t believe I’m saying this) really is so versatile.  And so delicious.

Barclay said that he’d recommend that his fellow super-mustard-lovers should add in a little extra mustard and go a little lighter on the honey. So feel free to modify this recipe to taste however you’d like! But if you happen to be in my camp and like the sweet and savory balance, I think you’ll dig the recipe below.

Enjoy, friends!

Description

This Honey Mustard Salmon recipe features a homemade honey mustard sauce that is super delicious (and easy to adapt if you like to go heavier on the honey or mustard side).  It can also be cooked quickly and easily in the oven or on the grill — your choice.

Ingredients

Scale

Honey Mustard Salmon In Foil:

  • 1 batch honey mustard sauce (see below)
  • 2 pound side of salmon, boneless and skinless
  • 1 tablespoon finely-chopped fresh parsley leaves

Honey Mustard Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup whole grain mustard
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

To Make The Honey Mustard Salmon In Foil:

  1. Heat oven to 375°F.  Or heat a grill to medium heat.
  2. Prepare your honey mustard sauce as directed below.
  3. Line a large baking sheet with a large sheet of aluminum foil.  Mist the foil with cooking spray, then lay out the salmon in the middle of the foil.
  4. Spoon the honey mustard sauce on top of the salmon, and spread it around evenly so that it covers the top of the salmon.
  5. Fold the sides of the aluminum foil up and over the top of the salmon until it is completely enclosed.  (If your sheet of foil is not large enough, just place a second sheet of foil on top and fold the edges so that it forms a sealed packet.)
  6. To Cook In The Oven: Bake for 14-15 minutes, or until the salmon is almost completely cooked through.  (Cooking times will vary on the thickness of your salmon, so I recommend checking it a few minutes early if you have a thinner cut of salmon.)  Remove the salmon from the oven and carefully open and pull back the aluminum foil so that the top of the fish is completely exposed.  (Be careful, lots of hot steam will be released!)  Change the oven setting to broil, then return the fish to the oven and broil for 2-3 minutes.  (Keep a close eye on the salmon while broiling, though, to be sure that the sauce does not burn.)
  7. To Cook On The Grill: Carefully transfer the packet of salmon to the grill, and grill for 12-14 minutes, or until the salmon is almost completely cooked through.  (Cooking times will vary on the thickness of your salmon, so I recommend checking it a few minutes early if you have a thinner cut of salmon.)  Carefully open and pull back the aluminum foil so that the top of the fish is completely exposed.  (Be careful, lots of hot steam will be released!)  Continue cooking for 3-4 minutes, until the fish is cooked through.
  8. Remove salmon from the oven or grill.  Sprinkle the top of the salmon evenly with parsley, and serve immediately.

To Make The Honey Mustard Sauce:

  1. Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl until combined.

Notes

If you really love mustard, feel free to increase the mustard amount to 1/2 cup, and/or scale back a bit on the honey.

  1. I made this for dinner this evening. It was very easy to make but I do have one complaint. Covering the entire fish allows the fish to cook in it’s own juices but there was WAY TOO MUCH juice when I unwrapped the salmon. I did broil it for a few minutes but that did not cook off enough of the juices. I feel like the juice took much of the taste away from the fish. It tasted watered down. The next time I cook this recipe I will let the fish bake uncovered. I will say that the honey mustard sauce was delicious though. ?

  2. I’m thinking about doing this with fish fillets today. I’ll add red pepper flakes to the honey mustard mix for a bit of heat. Thanks for the idea!!

  3. This was great! I will definitely make this again.

  4. I will be using Dijon mustard instead. Do I use the same amount?

  8. Very yummy and lite. I tired to guesstimate how many clarories the recipe is. Would you say about 160 per serving?

  10. I’ve always been intimidated by cooking salmon for some reason, but I had the family coming over for dinner so I decided to buck up and cook myself some salmon! This recipe was very easy to follow along with, and it turned out so delicious! I’ve never been more impressed by salmon before, thanks for sharing!

  15. We love this recipe , this is the second
time making it. Can hardly wait !!!

  16. I have made this several times and it is delicious. Would thos sauce work with other types of fish. No everyone is a salmon lover.

  17. Needed a quick, gluten free twist on the honey mustard classic and this was FABULOUS. Got rave reviews from EVERYONE at the table, from age 10 to age 50.
    Many thanks for this keeper!

  18. I got to this recipe by searching “healthy” salmon recipes. A bit surprised you don’t provide nutritional values. People looking for healthy recipes generally are also looking for nutritional values.

  19. Made for dinner this week. I have a handful of salmon recipes that I really like. This will definitely be added to my regular salmon recipe rotation. Fantastic. I was a little bit nervous about the amount of mustard. I like mustard but not when it is overpowering. The combination with the honey and everything else was just fantastic. Even my (little bit picky) 13 year old son really liked it. I loved the amount of sauce. Thanks for sharing.

  20. FANTASTIC, WINNER RECIPE! Gets rave reviews every time?. This one’s a keeper , a classic.
    Thank you!

  21. Made this dish-delicious! I used sockeye salmon, will try with coho next time. The mustard sauce was yummy!

  22. Mine was not nearly as gorgeous as yours, but it tasted great. I did find there was more liquid than I liked, even though I dabbed the fish dry before dressing with the delicious honey-mustard. I served it with a red cabbage and apple slaw. Wonderful!

  23. Made this tonight, it was just okay, I will not be making it again, there are other salmon recipes out there that have so much more flavor and are better.

  24. I made this tonight, and my husband informed me that this was the best salmon I have ever cooked for him! Amazing! I can’t wait to make it again. All of the recipes I’ve tried from you have been fantastic.

  25. Followed recipe 100%. Delicious! My 5 year old licked the plate, and my husband made yummy noises the entire time he was eating. I will be making this again.

  26. Made it on the grill. Delicious. Even hubby loved it and he claims he does not like mustard or garlic

  27. Just want to say, followed the recipe exactly and it was delicious.

  28. This sauce makes for some delicious salmon! If I wanted to make a larger batch of the sauce to have on hand, how long do you think I could store it in the fridge? Thanks so much!

  29. I plan to prepare 3 hours ahead with sauce in foil and refrigerate. Often prepare ahead. None of the comments referenced that issue Have you prepared this recipe ahead with success?

  30. I made this recipe last night with green bean and rice sides. Was delicious. My husband and I will make it again. Thank you.

  31. This is our new favorite salmon recipe. We modified by grilling on a cedar plank. It’s Devine!

  32. Made for dinner tonight, honey liked it but liked other recipes better. I love the flavor but could use half the sauce recipe and have plenty for 2+lbs. Will try again with half the sauce and maybe more mustard!! Thanks for sharing!! Nice to have a starter recipe and then love to make them my own by adding my own touch!

  33. Very good way to make Salmon and easy to prep!

  34. This fish was so good even my kids loved it! It was a nice change from the typical lemon fish I usually do. The recipe was fast and easy, I will definately do again! Thanks!

  35. Very tasty and easy to make… Thanks.

  36. Absolutely delish! So easy, great flavor and got rave reviews from the hubby. Thanks for the great recipe, we will have this in our rotation from now on.

  37. My go-to salmon recipe!

  38. Just made this and am definitely a fan of the sauce! Very tasty and I’ll use again. Only issue I had was with the method of cooking… after 3+ minutes of broiling @ 500 the fish still wasn’t browned BUT the remaining sauce on the tin foil was charred and creating a ton of smoke… not sure how to resolve this. Next time I may try searing the fish skin side down on a skillet until the bottom is cooked and crispy, then lathering on the sauce and finishing the top under the broiler.

    You amaze me.

  41. BEST recipe for salmon, not unhealthy and EASY!! Is it bad I double the sauce for the portion?? Will be making this for years!

  42. Simple but delicious

  43. I cook salmon at least once a week and am always looking for new ways to prepare. This looks AMAZING! Thanks for posting.

  44. This is an easy yet delicious recipe. Even my picky son had a second serving, and that rarely happens! A keeper recipe for sure.

  45. Made this this evening. Delicious dish. Didn’t look as pretty as the picture, maybe the honey I used was thinner…or mustard wasn’t as thick. Either way, the taste was perfect. Husband loved it too! Thanks

  46. Such a delicious AND healthy recipe! I added some couscous and squash & zucchini on the side, made the recipe exactly as instructed, and it was beautiful and delicious! Wish I could add a picture – I added a couple of slices of lemon on the filets. Love this! Will be making it again!

  47. Just made this and it was delicious! I was nervous with the whole mustard seeds but don’t be! It’s SOOO good! This was also my first time ever cooking salmon!
Make sure to put it on broil! It dries out all the liquid and makes it have more of a crust that you see in her photos!
Thank you so much for the recipe!

  48. Loved this recipe! Low fuss, easy, but great flavor!

  49. Made this on the grill tonight and it turned out great! A delicious way to make salmon. Will plan to make this again.
