Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! ? ? ?

We’re missing all of you in the States lots and lots today, and hope that each of you have a delicious and gratitude-filled day ahead, surrounded by those you love. It’s 70 degrees and sunny today here in Barcelona (nooo complaints here), and our Friendsgiving celebration with friends is not actually until tomorrow, since everyone here is at work today. So we’ve got our windows flung open, our Netflix fireplace on, a little candle burning, some Christmas tunes playing, and a pumpkin roll in the works. But otherwise, it’s a pretty dang normal Thursday here in Spain. So I’m living vicariously through all of your Instagram feeds, while munching on a bocadillo here. You know. ?

That said, we finished up editing a new video for you this morning, so I thought I’d go ahead and pop it here on the blog in case you feel like watching some YouTube once the turkey coma sets in.

As I mentioned on Instagram, this past weekend marked our 1st month-i-versary of living in Spain! And over the past few months, we’ve received so many kind messages and thoughtful questions from all of you, asking about how life is going over here. So we thought we would try making some monthly update videos to document our highs, lows, and “whoas” each month. Plus, answer some of your most-asked questions with a brief Q&A at the end.

So here’s our first shot at this! We’d love to know what you think!! And if you have any questions for next month, feel free to leave those in the comment section below, and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for future videos to come. Also, I should mention that we had some technical difficulties and somehow accidentally erased most of our “whoas” section, so ha, more on those next month.

Thanks so much for tuning in, and again, for all of your amazing support this past month. I’m so thankful for each of you, and am sending lots of love your way today from Barca. ?

  1. Happy Thanksgiving from the states, Ali. I was born and raised in New Orleans, but have resided in Kansas City, MO since 1990. I collect cookbooks and recipes and I so enjoy receiving your emails. The recipes and stories are awesome. I wish you and yours a wonderful life in Spain. I’m jealous. ?

Tell Jorge his australian friends sent you!

  5. We bought a VW van and moved to Provence when our kids were in grade school. I can testify to the strange organization systems in France. A wonderful year for all of us. Kids went to village school we went to university. Had some very highs and very lows. Realized we are Canadians through and through but wouldn’t have missed it for the world. We froze all winter, go figure, Canadians complaining about the cold!!! Enjoy your c

  6. Oooooh I’m so glad you’re going to be doing these updates! My husband and I are interested in moving abroad in the next few years, so we’ve been closely following your journey. Can’t wait to watch!

  7. Hola!

I enjoyed your video – brought back many memories for me. I lived in London for two years after getting married there, then we relocated to Marbella in So. Spain. Five years later, every day was still amazing! And you’re right – I thought I was fairly fluent before going, and learned different real quick! I miss the tapas bars and outdoor dining. I know live in Hilton Head Island SC the past 10 years. I remember one of my American friends asked after I moved to Spain if it was part of Mexico…really? And yes, there are no tacos to be found in Espana – enjoy your journey – I’ll be watching!

  8. LOVE your video updates!! Keep them coming each month and hope your Thanksgiving was very Spanish. LOL

  9. Ah expat life! It will be one of the experiences that shape who you are. It teaches you some very interesting lessons about yourself, about being an American, and about life. We lived in Switzerland for 2 years and it was amazing, but like you said unlike being on a vacation – you still have to get through every day life. Even ordering food at the deli was a challenge. The stress of having everything be “hard” the first time. I hit a wall once when I dropped the milk and my husband found my in the kitchen LITERALLY crying over spilled milk!!
:-) Once thing we learned is that holidays you have to do a little more work to make them “special”. It doesn’t just happen. We ordered our turkey from a big chain store… one of our friends ordered a turkey there and when she went to pick it up the butcher walked out a live turkey just to mess with her! LOL Glad you found a salsa recipe! Hang in there! Sounds like you are off to a great start!

  10. Hi Ali, loving your video updates. Pls share your salsa solution with us :) Hope you’ve found a way to make it a little spicy. Strange about the absent jalapenos. I’d miss the cranberries too…. they’re such a special tart bite, so good for thanksgiving and beyond. I love the leftover cranberry “sauce” made with spice and orange over plain greek yog. Best breakfast!

  11. Happy Thanksgiving! I have been following your blog for awhile now, and I am very excited for your adventures in Spain. I also can’t wait for you to go to Portugal–which is an awesome place, for sure! Thank you for videoing your story. The two of you are so cute!

  12. Love it, friends!!! You did a great job. Keep it coming! All our love to you both.

  13. Hello guys!
Found your blog totally by accident through a recipe in Pinterest. I am from Barcelona and live in the USA (California)!!! The reverse story!! I loved this video of the first month review. You guys rock! It’s so easy to get negative when things are so different and not the way you are used to, but you see the bright side in almost everything. The video really well done and kept me watching until the end.
I hope that you make lots of new friends there, they should LOOOOVE you. :)
And please move around there are so many places to walk, visit the Gracia neighborhood for example.
Take care ok, if you have any question about BCN I can help you with I will be glad to answer.

  14. Love this update video! You two are incredibly brave to move to a new country. I find it hard enough to move to a new city where I speak the language (except I live in El Paso, TX and still haven’t learned Spanish… -my lousy hearing and new languages don’t get along well). I hope you continue to enjoy living in one of my favorite places, and I’ll look forward to your next update.

  15. We definitely have a shopping bag like that here in Sydney. I love having the opportunity living in a different country. Hopefully some day will be able to live somewhere that I can practice my Spanish skills (formerly from Phoenix). Love hearing the difference in foods, since we deal with the same thing here. Surprisingly spicy food is challenging to find, even though there is a large Asian cuisine culture here.
