Trust me — this Mint Mojito Iced Coffee recipe is a game changer.

Mint Mojito Iced Coffee Recipe

Last week while I was back visiting the States for a work trip to San Francisco, I mentioned on Instagram how thrilled I was to finally be back in the land of good iced coffee, and asked for local recommendations. Instantly, my message box started filling up with two unexpected words:

Mint. Mojito.

“You absolutely must try the mint mojito iced coffee from Philz,” you said. “I know it sounds weird, but trust me,” you said. “It’s the best coffee in San Francisco!” you said. “Absolute game changer,” you said.

I’ve gotta admit — I’m usually a black coffee purist, and don’t like to add any extra cream or sweeteners or flavors to my coffee. But so many of you messaged me about this mysterious drink that my interest was officially piqued. So my friend, Kathryne, agreed to venture out with me to the bustling Philz Coffee that was nearest our hotel, where we each ordered a mint mojito coffee to go, watched as our barista brewed each of our drinks by hand and poked a big leafy sprig of fresh mint as a garnish on top. Admittedly still a bit skeptical, we each took a sip. And then…another. And…another. And…basically freaked out.

Guys, where has mint coffee been all my life?!?

Everything about this iced coffee was not what I expected. It was certainly minty, but not in any artificial or overpowering sort of way. It was sweet, but not overly sweet. It was slightly creamy, but not overly thick or rich. It was basically just the perfect balance of everything, resulting in the most refreshing, simple, delightful drink that seemed perfect for summertime. We couldn’t get enough of it. So…literally came back the next day before a road trip and ordered two mint mojito iced coffees each, thankyouverymuch, just so we didn’t run out. And then immediately resolved to learn how to make magical mint coffee for ourselves at home.

I think I’ve figured it out.

Perfect Mint Mojito Iced Coffee

Mint Mojito Iced Coffee Ingredients:

Alright, so let’s talk ingredients. To make my own homemade version of this mint coffee, I used the following ingredients (affiliate links included):

  • Freshly-Brewed Strong Coffee: Key words — fresh and strong. Brew up a cup of strong coffee to serve as the base for this recipe with whatever brewing method you prefer (pour-over, French press, Aeropress, or even just a traditional drip coffee pot will totally work). A few of you asked, and cold brew would also work too.
  • Fresh Mint: The more, the merrier here. I used about a dozen large fresh mint leaves for each serving, plus a cute little sprig to poke on top as a garnish, if you’d like.
  • Sweetener: I used raw turbinado sugar in my drink, but any kind of sugar or sweetener will do.
  • Cream: I’m pretty sure that Philz used straight cream (yum), but half and half, milk, or coconut milk also work great.
  • Ice: You’ll need quite a bit of it to cool off the freshly-brewed hot coffee.

Also, you will need either a cocktail shaker or a mason jar, if you’d like to make the coffee extra frothy and delicious. (Or you can save a step, and just stir the coffee together in a large glass. Up to you!)

How To Make Mint Coffee:

Don’t worry, this drink doesn’t include a bunch of fancy steps, and will come together in just an extra minute or so that it takes you to brew the coffee. To make mint coffee, simply:

  1. Brew your coffee: With whatever brewing method you prefer, brew up a nice strong cuppa coffee.
  2. Muddle the mint and sweetener: In a cocktail shaker or mason jar, use a muddler (or the end of a thick wooden spoon) to gently muddle together the mint and sweetener in order to release all of those tasty oils from the mint. (Although heads up — don’t break up the mint into a zillion small pieces, otherwise they will get stuck in your straw.)
  3. Add ice, coffee and cream: Add a big handful of ice to the shaker, followed by the hot coffee and a splash of cream if you would like.
  4. Give it a good shake: Then cover and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, or until the coffee feels completely chilled.
  5. And…serve! Then pour the mixture (coffee, mint, ice and everything) into your serving glass. Maybe add a few extra ice cubes if needed. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. And enjoy!

Mint Coffee Variations:

Want to mix things up a bit with this recipe? Feel free to try:

  • Blending It: If you’d like to try this as a frozen, blended coffee, just use cold brew (or chilled coffee) instead of the hot coffee, and pop everything in the blender and puree until smooth.
  • Different Kinds Of Mint: A follower on Instagram mentioned that she used fresh “chocolate mint” leaves in this, and loved it. So feel free to experiment with different varieties of fresh mint!
  • Adding Chocolate:  If you’d like a more chocolate-y drink, just add in a tablespoon of cocoa powder.
  • Adding Vanilla:  For a subtle vanilla undertone, add in a half teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • Adding Heat: To give this drink a subtle kick, add in a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Adding Booze: Feel like turning this into a cocktail? A splash of Bailey’s would be pretty awesome here. (Although heads up — you probably will not need as much sweeter and cream, if you try this.)

Description

Trust me — this Mint Mojito Iced Coffee recipe is a game changer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup freshly-brewed strong coffee
  • 12 large fresh mint leaves, plus extra sprig for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar (or your desired sweetener)
  • 1 cup ice
  • splash of cream (or half and half, milk, coconut milk, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Brew the coffee however you prefer (pour-over, French press, Aeropress, traditional drip, any method will work).
  2. Then while the coffee is brewing, combine the mint and sweetener in a cocktail shaker (or mason jar).  Use a muddler (or the end of a thick wooden spoon) to gently muddle the mint — thoroughly enough so that those yummy minty oils get released, but also not so much that you break it up into a hundred tiny pieces that’ll get stuck in your straw. ;)
  3. Fill the shaker with ice.  Then pour the hot coffee over the ice, and add a splash of cream if desired.
  4. Cover the shaker, and shake vigorously for 15 seconds until completely chilled.
  5. Transfer the iced coffee to your serving glass (if using a separate glass).  Then add a few extra ice cubes if needed, garnish with a sprig of mint, and serve cold!

Notes

*If making this vegan, be sure to use non-dairy creamer such as coconut or almond milk.

Big thanks to Philz Coffee in San Francisco for the inspiration!

  1. This is something I want to try! I am a big fan of black coffee but this sounds delicious!

  2. Omg, just made it and I am obsessed. This is SO GOOD!

  3. I was getting a little bored with cold brew since I switched to half and half and thought this might be something new to try.
It is really quite good and now I need to vastly expand my mint patch. Cold brew, mojitos, tabouleh, spring rolls. How’s will I ever get enough mint?

    • OMGosh, you best be careful! Mint will take over your garden and will multiply like crazy. I suggest keeping it contained in a small patch, trust me you will have plenty! :) Can’t wait to try this coffee!

  4. I love making coffee drinks at home! Definitely going to try the chocolate variation :)

  5. I don’t even like coffee but this sounds absolutely fantastic. Wish I lived near a Phil’s location so I could try it.

  6. I need this in my life right this second. Mojitos are my favorite and I have to have my iced coffee so yes please. .

  7. Doesn’t pouring the hot fresh brewed coffee over ice melt it all and dilute the coffee? Should the coffee be strong enough to account for that?

    Thanks,
    Laura

    • Yes, make a strong cup of coffee. Alternatively make the coffee and keep it in the fridge until it cools. Both ways worked well for me and it was pretty close to the original.

  8. I’m going to buy some mint right now! I’ve got to try this!

  9. My favorite part about visiting SF is Philz! It’s so good! So happy to have a make at home recipe :)

  10. This lives up to the hype! I made this today using my usual cold brew, simple syrup, milk and fresh mint. So so so very good. Not really mint flavored like toothpaste or mint tea but just an awesome little je ne se quoi to my usual morning cold brew. Already looking forward to it tomorrow from my endless supply of mint leaves.

  11. I’ve been making this every morning since you first posted the recipe and am in LOVE! It’s perfection!

  12. Made with cold brew coffee, mint and a little Bailey’s cream then poured into freezer pop bags.
I kept the bags in a vertical position so any remaining unfiltered coffee dust and mint bits would settle to the bottom while freezing. Then for some of the pops I waited until the liquid was semi frozen and then drizzled a little chocolate syrup into the pop bag and used an ice pick to run veins of syrup down the pop. You can lay the bags horizontal after the syrup step if you choose to do this. Once fully frozen the syrup was like fudge in the coffee pop.
Coffee, mint, chocolate with a light creaminess.
The pop size also helps keep portion control within reason for those that want the enjoyment of flavors but not the excess sugar/calories.

This evil genius recipe was inspired by both the margarita pops recipe and this coffee mojito recipe.
    Feel free to share.

  13. Wow. Very interesting recipe. Can’t wait to try it!!

  14. Hi Ali! I had never heard of mint iced coffee but now I CAN’T WAIT to make it! Yay. Thanks for the recipe.

  15. Sooooo good! Live in AZ and only drink homemade cold brew (amazing local organic “Cowboy Beans” from ROC2 Roastery in Cave Creek). Mulled some mint leaves with some vanilla almond milk creamer, added my cold brew and was HOOKED:-) It’ll be a regular this summer….

  16. I was a bit skeptical but tried it because every other recipe I have used from this website have been good. This is AMAZING!

  17. I was a bit skeptical but tried it because every other recipe I have used from this website has been good. This is AMAZING! SO refreshing.

  18. I don’t think I can ever have enough iced mint coffees. Love this!

  19. Ali! This was a home run! Just made some for my husband (who is highly suspicious of any added flavors, sweeteners, etc. in his coffee) and he loved it! I am about to go on to my second jar :) Brava!

  20. My new favorite drink!! You’ve saved me a fortune on Philz… Cheers to you!

  21. Fyi, they recently added a rosé iced coffee to the line up. Just as refreshing as the mint mojito. I hope you get a chance to indulge when you get back to the Bay Area.

  22. If you want the taste of mint in iced coffee, try an iced Tantalizing Turkish from Philz Coffee. They add a sprig of mint. Delicious and refreshing and you save all those calories.

  23. Yesss!! Since quarantine I haven’t been to Philz but was craving for the Mint Mojito Iced Coffee. So glad I found your website because this was spot on!! Didn’t realize how easy it was to make it at home. THANK YOU!

  24. This is a great recipe, and as someone who used to have this drink two or three times a week, I can attest that it is pretty close to the original.

I would note that at Philz they ask you if you want your drink “sweet and creamy“. To get closer to that, I doubled the sugar and the cream. Of course not everybody wants sweet and creamy and this recipe I think is closer to light sweet and light cream.

    Thank you!!

  25. This is awesome!! So tasty. I haven’t been to Philz yet (despite needing to go to SF for work 3-4x a year), but all of my coworkers swear by it. Glad I got to taste what the hype was about!

For the hard-version, I also think Kahlua would work really well too, or maybe even spiced Rum (to really keep it in theme with the whole ‘mojito’ thing – which also uses rum, albeit white rum).

  26. Maybe e it is because I am not using cream (just regular milk), but it isn’t a Philz copy for sure.

Tasty still, but it doesn’t replace what Philz tastes like.

  27. Thanks for posting this. I too had my opinion of mint in coffee changed after a stop at Philz. I recently got some mint from a friend and this is just what I need to elevate my iced coffee this summer!

  28. But initially, iced coffee.

  29. What if I make my own cold brew? Would that work or does it need to be hot?

  30. The mojito was great, bartender 30yrs. Best one I tasted ever.

  31. The mint in my garden is growing so beautifully, so I had to look up a recipe for mint coffee. I love me some Philz mint mojito coffee and now I can make it at home!! It turned out awesome. Thank you for sharing your recipe!

  32. Just tried this today and it’s SO delicious! I’ve made it twice today. Thank you.

  33. I am loving this recipe. SO good. It’s delicious. I absolutely love mint. This is especially good with the heavy cream in it. Thank you so much for the recipe. I even got my daughter loving this coffee. : )
