The Artist

Laura Muse hails from London where she works as a copywriter at an ad agency (she told me — think Peggy from Mad Men). Muse started her Etsy shop, The Sewing Muse, to share both her vintage finds and her own unique creations.

Her first Penguin cushion (Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own) was an inspired Christmas gift for a friend who already had a large Penguin books collection. It takes Muse around 20 hours to finish one and surprisingly, the bit that takes the longest is the border around “Penguin Books” at the top of the cushion.

Penguin Cushion

The Sewing Muse offers custom orders so you can choose between the traditional orange or dark green colour bands and also pick your own book title. (Browse the first 1000 vintage Penguin paperbacks for some inspiration.)

Muse is currently sewing new cushion designs from vintage silks her boyfriend’s Grandma gave her, so be sure to check out her shop soon to see these beauties, as well.

  1. I had a dream two nights ago that Gatsby was talking to me, so I’d have to say he’s my favorite character. So excited to see the movie! And what a wonderful pillow!

  2. I have to go with the man himself. Fascinating.

  3. Daisy

  4. Favorite quote “a hug is like a boomerang — you get it back right away”

  5. Nick Carraway is my favorite. I like how his character develops and his morality strengthens despite the lack of it in the people around him.

    • He’s an interesting narrator. You only get glimpses of him, but it does subtly build into a fairly favourable character sketch. Quite fascinating how Fitzgerald does it.

  6. One of my favorite quotes is when Nick sums up Tom and Daisy as “careless people.” “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy–they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

  7. I love Nick, but I love Gatsby more, especially when he waits all night outside of Daisy’s window.

    And Owl Eyes, of course.

  8. Wow! That pillow is adorable. It’s hard to pick a favourite character as most have such terrible qualities, but I’m always intrigued by Daisy, so I’ll go with her!

  9. My favorite character is the enigmatic Gatsby. What can I say, I love a mysterious man!

  10. On of my favorite Gatsby quotes is, “I’ve been drunk for about a week now, and I thought it might sober me up to sit in a library.” It makes me chuckle every time.

    • Ha! Owl Eyes is one of the best random characters ever. I love how he keeps exclaiming over the “real” books.

  11. I love Nick!

  12. My favorite quote is Daisy, on her newborn girl: “All right…I’m glad it’s a girl. And I
hope she’ll be a fool — that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”

  13. Daisy Buchanan

  14. Gotta go with Gatsby

  15. “Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.”

  16. My favorite character is Daisy.

  17. Favorite quote: “Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.”

  18. i love the great gatsby would love the pillow.

  19. I’m so excited to see this movie!!

  20. My favorite quote…eek! It’s a book of so many classic lines and unexpectedly poetic phrasing. Let me claim the last line: So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

  21. totes cute. that orange pillow would fit my living room scheme perfectly.

  22. Oh my fave character is definitely Gatsby. Even more after seeing the movie ..;)

  23. Daisy is my favorite. The science of charm!

  24. My favourite character is Gatsby’s dad.

    • Oh man. I should’ve known you’d come up with a singular answer. ;) One of the most fascinating lines in the book (for me) is about Mr. Gatz — “his eyes leaking isolated and unpunctual tears”.

  25. Do I need to leave two comments? Um, let’s see, this pillow idea is great!

  26. My favorite character is definitely Gatsby. I feel a tragic, pitying sort of affection for him.

  27. I also would like to start a collection of penguin pillows…please oh please let the gatsby one be the first! *crossing fingers*

  28. I’m curious how Daisy and Tom’s marriage continued on down the line. She had to have been pretty heartbroken about the turn of events, even if she cared more about herself than anyone else.

    • [spoiler alert]

I’d guess it continued on pretty similar to how it had been — except that Daisy probably didn’t cheat on Tom again (though Tom most certainly continued to have flings throughout their marriage). Their relationship and their “love” was convenient and didn’t exact too much from either of them. If Daisy wouldn’t change it for Gatsby, she probably wouldn’t change it for anyone.

  29. oh, fav line: “Reserving judgements is a matter of infinite hope.”

  30. Gatsby, of course. I really want to see the new movie. I’m a visual person.

BTW – LOVE LOVE LOVE the pillow. My hubby loves penguins, so I would love to win for him.

  31. My favorite character is the man with the owl-eyed glasses in Gatsby’s library. :)

  32. Adorable pillow. Fantastic embroidery work!

  33. Oops, and Gatsby is my fave!

  34. This pillow is great.
