Shrimp Tacos Recipe

Meet the zesty shrimp tacos that we can’t stop making lately. ♡

Since other proteins haven’t been reliably in stock at our local grocery store these past few weeks, we’ve been cooking with frozen shrimp more than ever while we have been stuck at home. And one recipe we keep craving again and again are these ultra-flavorful shrimp tacos.

They are basically just a simple riff on my favorite crispy baked fish tacos, filled with a bright and creamy cilantro lime slaw, lots of fresh avocado, a quick chipotle crema, and sprinkled with any of your favorite toppings. But the shrimp here are what really set this recipe over the top. They are coated in an extra-generous sprinkling of taco seasoning and then briefly cooked over high heat so that the spices are lightly charred and pack the best bold and zesty flavors. And when loaded up together with all of the other fillings in soft tortillas — especially these amazing homemade flour tortillas that I’m currently obsessing over! — these shrimp tacos are a total, delicious win.

Here’s how to make them!

Cilantro Lime Slaw

Shrimp Taco Ingredients:

To make this shrimp tacos recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Shrimp: Just a pound of peeled and deveined large shrimp.
  • Taco seasoning: Either store-bought or homemade taco seasoning, which we will use to season the shrimp along with some sea salt and black pepper.
  • Tortillas: I’m loving these homemade flour tortillas lately, but you can use any type of homemade or store-bought tortillas that you prefer.
  • Cilantro Lime Slaw: I whipped up a batch of this favorite slaw, made with cole slaw mix, Greek yogurt, cilantro, green onions, lime juice, garlic and seasonings — which I love. But if you would like a simpler slaw option, see an alternate simpler recipe below.
  • Chipotle Crema: Made with Greek yogurt (or mayo), one chipotle in adobo, lime juice and sea salt.
  • Favorite Toppings: Feel free to also sprinkle the tacos with any toppings you love, such as chopped fresh cilantro, chopped red or white onion, sliced jalapeño or serrano peppers, and/or crumbled cotija cheese.

How To Make Shrimp Tacos:

Here’s a quick overview of how to make shrimp tacos! Full instructions included in the recipe below…

  1. Prep the slaw and crema: Prep the cilantro lime slaw and the chipotle crema. (Feel free to puree the crema in a blender, or you can just finely chop the chipotle then stir everything together in a bowol)
  2. Cook the shrimp. Season the shrimp with lots of taco seasoning, plus a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Then sauté in oil in a non-stick pan until they are cooked through.
  3. Assemble the tacos: Load those tortillas up with a generous serving of the slaw, a few slices of avocado, a few shrimp, a drizzle of chipotle crema and sprinkle of your favorite toppings.
  4. Serve. Then dive in while they’re nice and warm and ENJOY!

Possible Variations:

Want to customize this shrimp tacos recipe? Feel free to…

  • Make it gluten-free: Just use gluten-free tortillas (flour or corn), and double-check that your taco seasoning is gluten-free (if using store-bought).
  • Make it dairy-free: Use vegan mayo in place of the Greek yogurt.
  • Make it spicier: Mix 1/4 teaspoon (or more) of cayenne into the taco seasoning, use a jalapeño in the slaw recipe, and/or top your tacos with sliced jalapeño peppers.
  • Make a simpler slaw: Just mix 1 bag of cole slaw mix with 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, 1/4 cup fresh lime juice, 2 tablespoons oil, and season with a generous pinch of salt, black pepper and ground cumin. Feel free to also drizzle in some honey for a sweeter slaw.
  • Use chipotle chili powder: Instead of using canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, you are welcome to sub in 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder. (Then you can just stir the crema together instead of pureeing it in a blender.)

Description

This easy shrimp tacos recipe is made with zesty shrimp, cilantro lime coleslaw, sliced avocado and a spicy chipotle crema.  See notes above for possible recipe variations and shortcuts too.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp Taco Ingredients:

Chipotle Crema Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (or mayo)
  • 1 chipotle chile in adobo sauce (or 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder)
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Prep the slaw and crema: Prepare the cilantro lime slaw according to instructions. Combine all of the chipotle crema ingredients in a blender and pulse until smooth.*
  2. Cook the shrimp. In a mixing bowl, toss the shrimp with the taco seasoning, plus a generous pinch of salt and black pepper, until evenly coated.  Heat oil in a large non-stick sauté pan over medium-high heat.  Cook the shrimp for 3 to 4 minutes, flipping once, until they are opaque and cooked through.  Transfer to a clean plate and set aside.
  3. Assemble the tacos: Fill each flour tortillas with a generous serving of the slaw, a few slices of avocado, a few shrimp, a drizzle of chipotle crema and sprinkle of your favorite toppings.
  4. Serve. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

How to make chipotle crema by hand: If you would like to skip the blender, just finely chop the chipotle in adobo sauce and stir it together with the other ingredients in a mixing bowl until evenly combined.  Or if you are using chipotle powder, you can definitely just stir the ingredients together by hand.

The family was impressed with the homemade tortillas.

  5. Making these soon! Any tips on using frozen shrimp?

  6. These were so simple and so tasty!! We made everything according to the recipe and it was perfect. Paired it with your fresh strawberry margaritas and a jicama and radish salad from Fine Cooking. Can’t wait to enjoy leftovers tomorrow! Thanks for another fabulous meal at home!!

  9. These are delicious. I like most of your recipes but this was excellent.

  10. Wow…great tasty recipes

  11. It was very good although I don’t recommend substituting mayo (at least not the same amount as listed), too much mayo ?, I’m sure the yogurt is a lot better.

  12. During lockdown I’ve been trying to stay true to Taco Tuesday and so far, this one is our favorite!!

  13. I never never never leave comments on anything! But I am compelled to write this comment because my very picky boyfriend gave these tacos rave reviews! In his words: “10 out of 10…restaurant quality…awesome job, babe!” This means a ton because I don’t cook much and we have really been missing our favorite restaurants during the pandemic. Thanks for helping to make our Saturday night special!

  14. I made these according to the recipe, all I can say is OMG. This has become a frequent request in my house. I make it as a surf and turf with flank steak and you cannot believe how yummy they are. Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe I have shared it with at least 5 people already!

  15. This was absolutely delicious! Used your taco seasoning recipe and the cilantro lime slaw and of course the chipotle crema. Don’t have the words to describe how good this was and other than substituting 2 to 1 sour cream and mayo, made no other substitutions and I don’t feel it needs any more tweaking. Wonderful! Thank you for the wonderful recipes!

  16. Absolutely delish! Especially the cole slaw! Ill be making that to eat by itself again soon. The crema needed something more or i would have given 5 stars. Overall vety tasty & super simple.

  17. I have made these once before and now tonight for friends visiting and dinner! They are amazing! I use sour cream instead of Greek yogurt but nothing else is changed. Perfect recipe! Thank you for sharing!

  18. Once again, I come to your site to find a simple, full flavored recipe.

    These tacos are scrumptious.. :O)

  19. This was so good. my entire family loved it. thank you so much for sharing

  20. omg, these were DELICIOUS. half a taco in and my boyfriend said that they were the best tacos he’s ever had, lol. we even added some store bought pineapple salsa on top and it was just the perfect cherry on top! thank you for this recipe, we will absolutely be using it again!!

  21. I made these shrimp tacos for my boyfriend’s birthday and he LOVED them. The spicy cole slaw and chipotle creme sauce are in point!!

  22. I subbed sour cream n cilantro garlic sauce -no mayo Was delicious.

  23. Best shrimp tacos ever!! I used a southwest chicken taco seasoning packet in place of the standard taco seasoning. But this will definitely make it back on the dinner menu soon!

  24. Wow!

From the tortillas, to the shrimp, to the slaw and the crema it was wonderful. Thank you!

  25. OMG…LISTEN! These tacos were AH-MAZING! I made the taco seasoning and it was a much better fit than store bought. My boyfriend and I had 5 tacos each. I highly recommend this recipe and he said this was in his top 5 favorite dishes that I have made for him.

  26. These tacos are SOOOO good. I wasn’t sure I would like the cilantro lime slaw or the crema but when you put it all together, it’s delicious. I’ve made these twice and they were a hit with both groups.

  27. Best recipe ever!

  28. Delicious! Especially the chipotle crema. Roughly how long do you think it stays good for in the fridge? Grabbing one chipotle and wasting the rest of the can is really a bummer!! Thanks in advance!

    • I had the same sadness so I started freezing my leftovers in a small glass jar and have used for recipes and they’ve been just as good!

  29. Every recipe from you is outstanding! Thank you! I did do the half Mayo half sour cream! So yummy!

  30. Loved it!! Is definitely going into the rotation.

  31. I made these last night for dinner and they were fantastic! I couldn’t believe how quick and easy! Definitely adding to my weeknight dinner rotation.

  32. Can these be made a little ahead before company comes? Breaded and ready to bake? Don’t want to be making mess while company is having cocktails so thought if I could make ahead and bake later?

  33. I made these tacos for my family and they all said they were the best tacos they ever had, thank you

  34. I just made and enjoyed 4 of these bad boys… Excellent flavor and simple recipe. The only suggestion I have is to opt for mayo in lieu of greek yogurt for the slaw and the crema… the recipe does suggest it as an option, but for me, I wasn’t fond of the bitterness that the greek yogurt brought to the fiesta. The mayo however, was moi bien!

  35. Do you have the nutritional facts for this recipe?

  36. So easy and delicious!!!! Hubby loved them. This will be my go to on Taco Tuesday.

  37. So yummy! Definitely on the list. I also tried it with butter lettuce instead of tortillas to make it a bit healthier and it was just as good!

  38. so excited to try. seems really yummy

  39. How much lime juice do you add to the sauce? Can’t wait to try these, I really love your recipes! Tree Service Colorado Springs

  40. AMAZING! I made the cilantro lime slaw and already I started to love it! The rest of the taco made it *mwah*! Even my kid was happy to eat them until she was full!

  41. HA HA HA HA …. my husband … a true carnivore. He doesn’t really like shrimp; doesn’t like sauces; doesn’t like cilantro; and would never squeeze lime juice on anything! He LOVED LOVED LOVED these shrimp tacos made with cilantro lime slaw. Followed directions except used 1/2 sour cream and 1/2 mayo instead of Greek yogurt (didn’t have any). I prepared the tacos and served them to him (so he didn’t know or see what is in them). He actually asked me to make them again! Amazing taste! HUGE WIN!!!!!!

  42. I agree with you! The best shrimp tacos ever. I made everything + more. Decided to pair with mango salsa given they are in season in Mumbai!

    Sooo good. Ty.

  43. I wanted to make something new and I LOVE SHRIMP! I was excited to try this. The recipes easy to follow only long part was deveining the shrimp. All made I just felt the cilantro is very potent, I am a person who can just tolerate it. But it did have many flavors going on. I don’t know if I’d make this exact recipe again, but I’m glad I tried it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to shake up their tacos!

  44. Awesome!!! I have been trying shrimp taco recipes for a year trying to find the right one with fresh flavors! I found it!!! This was absolutely delicious and the lime slaw made it! This will be a staple in my recipe box! Thank you!

  45. Wonderful recipie. Just remember there are 2 sauces one for the cole slaw and the other for the tacos. The first few times I made only one sauce but the third time I you needed 2 sauces and it was amazinf=g

  46. I just made these for dinner and they were amazing! This is a recipe I will have to keep Forever. I used only mayo. Didn’t have yogurt, and it still came out wonderful. It was spicy and had a great kick.

  47. Delicious 😋

  48. Never before had a surefire go-to recipe for shrimp, but this is now the one! Every member of the family loved it – even the “burger/pizza” only ones. The more daring who tried the sauce couldn’t stop commenting after nearly every bite. The only downside is that eating this recipe on a Lenten Friday makes the “sacrifice” a bit too easy to make.

  49. We just made this tonight for my Mom’s Mother’s Day dinner and we all LOVED IT! Thank you for all the variations you gave, I really appreciated them! The only things I did differently were:
    – used coleslaw dressing for the slaw mix plus the other ingredients for the slaw because I didn’t buy enough plain yogurt
    – added a chopped onion into the coleslaw
    – and I did use chipotle powder instead of the chipotles in adobo sauce as you said
I kept everything else the same and I plan to make this recipe again and again! 😁👍

  50. Yeeowzer. Talk about flavor bomb. My husband can’t stop talking about these. They will be in our monthly rotation for our Taco Tuesday dinners. Loved this. Thanks for sharing.
