tomato love recipe exchange finale {whole foods giveaway}

Wow – what an AMAZING summer! For those of you who are just tuning in, Cassie and I have spent the last eight weeks with you celebrating tomato recipes in partnership with the International Justice Mission’s Recipe for Change campaign. It has been everything I love — foodie love meeting with social justice. What could be better?

On the social justice side, we have been learning about how 1000+ laborers have been freed over the past decade from heartbreaking modern-day slavery conditions in the tomato fields in Florida. But then also coming together to stand for some work that still needs to be done to guarantee that our country enjoys slave-free tomatoes. The main action point in this has been to encourage you (yes, that’s you!) to commit to buying your tomatoes, especially in the off-season, from grocery stores that have signed the Fair Food Pledge. This program, developed by tomato workers themselves, establishes a zero-tolerance policy for slavery, child labor, and serious sexual harassment on Florida’s tomato farms. Many supermarkets (including Trader Joes, Whole Foods & many local stores) have already signed onto the pledge. But then if you haven’t already, Cassie and I are strongly encouraging you to take a minute (or less!) to fill out this online letter encouraging the remaining local and national supermarkets to get on board as well. This is a really easy way to make a BIG change in how we care for our tomato workers. So would encourage you to be a part!

Then to go with the tomato love on the “foodie” side, Cassie and I have been hosting weekly recipe exchanges with all of your favorite tomato recipes! I have posted a roundup below, so be sure to check them out for some great recipes to bookmark and try. But then for our grand finale, we are asking you all to share where it is that YOU like to buy your tomatoes. All you need to do to enter this week is to share a photograph of tomatoes — your favorite tomatoes from the farmers market, from your garden, your favorite grocery store, you name it! One of my favorite places to buy tomatoes (where I can also feel confident knowing that they have signed the Fair Food Pledge) is Whole Foods, who is sponsoring this week’s giveaway. So exciting!

So be sure to enter this week’s final giveaway. And from the bottom of my heart, I wanted to say thanks to each of you as well who have participated in all of the tomato love this summer. You all have encouraged, challenged and inspired me in countless ways, and I get so excited thinking about how a group of foodies have literally come together to help change the course of history for the better through celebrating tomatoes and the farmers who grow them. Thanks for supporting this project over the summer, and let’s continue to keep pressing for even more good changes to come in our nation’s tomato industry!

Here are all of the recipes that I have shared in the Tomato Love Recipe Exchange, beginning in the top-right, and curving down around. Each of these posts also contains the round-up of recipes that you all submitted, so be sure to scroll down and check those out too!

This Week’s Prize: Two people will win $100 giftcards to Whole Foods

Along with just about everyone I know, Cassie and I are huge fans of Whole Foods. For years, I have always considered it such a privilege to shop (and eat!) there. It is a gift to be able to walk into a store you can really trust to provide high quality ingredients, with an amazing assortment of organic options. And I absolutely love stopping by their salad bar for lunch, or to pick up their amazing warm soups in the wintertime. AND, Cassie and I especially love that they are committed to providing local produce like these amazing tomatoes in the photos. Such an amazing store. I’m so excited for whoever wins these gift certificates!

  1. Great roundup and you and Cassie have done an awesome job of making people aware of life in the tomato industry. I wish I could have participated more :( kudos to WF too, I was a Team Leader with them for 10 years before my stay at home dad gig :)

  2. I love to buy my tomatos at the Olathe Farmer’s Market. If I am unable to get there the only other place I will buy tomatos is WF. Next best thing to buying directly from the farmer (or growing your own ; )

  3. You both did an amazing job! Thanks for bringing such awareness and sharing such fabulous tomato love recipes each week! Hats off to you both! :)

  6. Here’s a super easy and tasty tomato recipe:

    Refreshing Tomato Salad

    Cube a tomato and a peeled cucumber. Mix together with 1 can of beans. Toss with olive oil, vinegar (whatever kind you’d like) and 2 tablespoons DILL. Season with sea salt to taste. Serve room temperature or chilled. (or, my favorite, warm beans and a cold cucumber! Fun temperature mixing!)

  7. My neighbor gave us some super sweet and beautiful cherry tomatoes and I made the PLT Breakfast Salad. Sharing the lovely photo with you…my Baby Girl adores these cherry tomatoes!
