This simple golden milk latte recipe is made with cozy warming spices, your choice of milk, and can be served either hot or iced.

Golden Milk Ingredients

Before we get to the full recipe below, here are a few notes about the golden milk ingredients that you will need:

  • Milk: I typically use plain oat milk to make this recipe, but any variety of plain milk (dairy or plant-based) that you prefer will be great.
  • Sweetener: I recommend adding maple syrup or honey to taste, but you’re welcome to use sugar or any type of sweetener that you love best.
  • Warming spices: I love to use a mix of ground turmeric, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, black pepper (which is said to help our bodies better absorb the nutrients in turmeric) and fine sea salt. That said, feel free to add in any other warming spices that you love too, such as nutmeg, allspice or cloves.
  • Vanilla extract: This pairs so well with the warming spices and really rounds out the flavors.

Golden Milk (Hot or Iced)

Description

Learn how to make homemade golden milk with this simple recipe. It’s quick and easy to make, full of good-for-you turmeric, and it’s delicious hot or iced!


Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain milk (I used oat milk)
  • 2 to 4 teaspoons maple syrup or honey, to sweeten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • pinch of black pepper and fine sea salt

Instructions

To Make A Hot Latte:

  1. Steam the milk. Steam the milk until warm and frothy using a frother. Or heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until nearly simmering, and whisk briefly until frothy.
  2. Mix until combined. Add sweetener, vanilla extract, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper and salt to a heatproof mug. Pour the steamed milk (minus the foam) into the mug and stir until combined. Add the foam on top and give it a brief stir.
  3. Add extra sweetener if needed.Give the latte a taste and add extra sweetener, if needed.
  4. Serve warm. Serve immediately and enjoy!

To Make An Iced Latte:

  1. Dissolve the spices. Heat 1/2 cup of the milk (or alternately you can just use hot water) until nearly simmering. In a heatproof glass or measuring cup, whisk together the hot milk, sweetener, vanilla extract (optional), turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper and salt until combined.
  2. Mix until combined. Fill a large glass with ice. Pour in the warm milk mixture. Then pour in the remaining cold milk, and stir briefly with a straw until combined.
  3. Add extra sweetener if needed. Give the iced latte a taste and add extra sweetener, if needed.
  4. Serve cold. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

Large-batch dry golden milk mix: To make a large batch (12 servings) of the dry golden milk mix, combine 1/3 cup ground turmeric, 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon, 2 tablespoons ground ginger, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper and 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt in a jar. Stir or cover and shake until combined, and store in a sealed container for up to 1 month. To use the dry golden milk mix, add 1 scant tablespoon to the recipe above as directed.

  7. I love this stuff! It helps me sleep too. Thanks for the idea of using a straw. I’ve also found that you can remove turmeric stains on your countertops or appliances by rubbing a little vegetable oil into the stain, then cleaning it with your regular cleanser.

  20. I grew up drinking this every time I got sick. It is a traditional Indian cure-all.  My sister and I hated being forced to drink this stuff but it has grown on me with age. Funny to see it catching on here as a trendy drink!

  23. Just tried this for the first time tonight. I will add a bit more honey next time (I only used a teaspoon) but this was really good! I had the same problem someone else mentioned with my cinnamon not dissolving, but I’ll play with the recipe. I really like it. Can you use any kind of milk? Even cow’s milk?

I wake up numerous times a night, with bad dreams and achy joints. I do not want to add any Pharmas’ to assist my desire for peaceful sleep.   32. Hi, I really like your recipe for the Golden Milk and look forward to trying it chilled. Just one thing though. I noticed that your recipe doesn’t include any fats. I have seen several recipes where coconut fat is used. It states it is to help absorption of the Turmeric. Would you know about this? Is the fat not important? I would think it would separate from the other liquids. Any thoughts? Thank you, Denise.

    • Hi Denise! Hmmm, that’s interesting, we hadn’t read/heard that, but we think you could definitely add some fat to this (maybe coconut oil, grass-fed butter, or yogurt perhaps). If you try it, let us know how it turns out! :)

  40. I love golden milk too and noticed you were missing the essential ingredient of fat. Turmeric needs 3 things in order for the anti-inflammatory properties to work: heat, fat and black pepper. Add 1/2 tsp of coconut oil to your recipe. ?

  46. Question: If I want to have this “iced,” do I have to heat it first? Could I combine all the ingredients and just let the mixture chill out in the fridge to “steep” overnight?
