Newsflash for ranch lovers! Did you know that it is super duper easy to make delicious ranch seasoning mix homemade?
True story. No need to run to the store for one of those processed packets, or to pick up a jar of your favorite ranch dressing or dip. All of the ingredients are likely sitting right there in your spice cabinet! Just do a little measuring, a little mixing, and you’re ready to make your favorite ranch dressing or dip or whatever other ranch-ness you may love in less than 5 minutes. It is seriously that easy!
The great thing too about homemade ranch seasoning is that it won’t be full of un-pronounceable mystery ingredients. Just your simple herbs and spices, and some optional powdered buttermilk if you’d like (similar to powdered milk).
I love using mine to make skinny Greek yogurt ranch dip, ranch dressing, or I’ll even just use the mix to season some chicken or fries. Delish!!!

Homemade Ranch Seasoning Mix
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 1 cup 1x
Description
Delicious ranch seasoning mix is super easy to make homemade!
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons dried parsley
- 2 teaspoons dried dill
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried chives
- 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
- optional: 1/3 cup buttermilk powder*
Instructions
- Whisk all ingredients together until blended. If you want a more finely-ground seasoning mix, you can pulse the mixture in a food processor until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Store in a sealed container for up to 1 year. (If using the buttermilk powder, refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 1 month.)
Notes
Buttermilk powder: If you would like to make ranch seasoning that is identical to the stuff sold in the packet, you can add buttermilk powder to this recipe. Otherwise, you can just add fresh buttermilk if you are turning this seasoning into ranch dressing.
Store-bought equivalent: Approximately 3 tablespoons of this mix (made with the buttermilk powder mixed in) equals 1 packet of the store-bought ranch seasoning mix.
To make ranch dressing: Combine 1 tablespoon ranch seasoning mix (including buttermilk powder) + 1/3 cup mayo + 1/3 cup milk, and whisk to combine.

So good! I didnt have any buttermilk at hand, but mixed it all up anyway. Also, used Greek yogurt instead of mayo. It works for us! My little guys are plowing threw it with carrots! Thanks! (Will add buttermilk next go around though)
Excellent flavour! I mixed it with mayo and sour cream for a veggie dip.
So excited!! Ready to make stinky pretzels & no ranch dressing.
So I made your recipe DOUBLE BATCH.
Thank you for reading my mind…made the recipe than thought how much is 1 PACKET. There was my answer.
Happy Thanksgiving
Kristen
Outstanding. It was great in the keto crack crockpot chicken – with buttermilk as well!
Awesome, glad to hear it!
Easy and awesome recipe…thanks for sharing this. For a non-dairy version dip, I like to use Vegenaise. It is a vegan replacement for mayonnaise. For dressing, I thin it with plain non-dairy milk, added a little at a time until it’s the right consistency. Vegenaise can be found at natural foods markets, or conventional Grocers that have a larger section of natural foods.
Awesome!
Can heavy cream be used instead of milk?
Yes, definitely. We hope you enjoy!
Absolutely love this recipe! I use it all the time to make fresh ranch dressing. My kids love to eat veges dipped in this. I do not use dry buttermilk- I make a dressing from delish.com that is called BLT wedge salad and follow their recipe for the actual dressing. It’s amazing!
Thank you, Pamela — we’re so happy you enjoy it (and that BLT wedge salad sounds fantastic)! :)
Perfect! Since we are eating low carb, I’m always looking for different seasoning blends. This (sans milk) was perfect for making microwave ranch flavored cheese crackers!
Microwave cheese crackers:
1) Put a piece of parchment paper on a microwave-safe plate (absolutely necessary!)
2) Put a small pile of a cheddar shredded cheese blend on the parchment paper.*
3) sprinkle in a pinch or two of almond flour.
4) add salt/pepper/spices to taste.
5) microwave for about a minute and 15 seconds, preferably with a splash guard overtop to protect your microwave (think nuking spaghetti sauce and the cleaning issues)*
6) remove from microwave and let cool.
7) enjoy crispy cheese crackers.
* If your crackers aren’t crispy when cooled, try using less cheese or microwaving a few seconds longer. Alternately, if they are too hard or burnt increase the amount of cheese or decrease the cooking time.
We’re so glad to hear that, Karen, thanks for sharing with us (those crackers sound delicious)! :)
A friend warned me of ingredients in Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix. Shocked to see 3rd ingredient is MSG! 2 packs going in trash!! I use it in homemade Chuys dip which is my favorite homemade salad dressing! Surprused this mix is refridgerated. Why with all dry ingredients? You will email answer? Thank you
Hi Glenda! It’s because of the dried buttermilk powder. We hope you enjoy the mix!
Ali, I have not used dried buttermilk powder before. Is it typically stored in the refrigerator? Or, are you storing the mix there because the DBP is now part of the mix. Thanks!
Hi Diana! Yes, the buttermilk powder is the reason why we recommend storing the mix in the fridge. We hope you enjoy!
My son cannot have dairy. Other than leaving the buttermilk out, are there other options? I’m particularly wanting to use this mix in a soup. If I add in a nutmilk at cooking would that work?
Hi Heather! We’re afraid we don’t know of any non-dairy alternatives for the buttermilk powder. You could try a plain nut milk and see how that works, but we haven’t experimented with that before, so we’re not sure.
I just made a non diary version of this mix for my husband who is dairy free and it was delicious!
If you put 1 tsp apple cider vinergar into a 1/3 cup measuring cup and fill the rest with almond/non dairy milk and let it sit for 10 minutes it becomes similar to buttermilk (and still give it that ranch tangyness!) I used that mixture instead of the buttermilk powder and milk, used veganaise instead of mayo and just added the apple cider vinegar mixture until it was the consistency I wanted (which ended up being less than the 1/3 cup)!
It is the best non dairy ranch I have tasted and even better than some dairy ranch!
