Homemade Ranch Seasoning Mix

Newsflash for ranch lovers! Did you know that it is super duper easy to make delicious ranch seasoning mix homemade?

True story. No need to run to the store for one of those processed packets, or to pick up a jar of your favorite ranch dressing or dip. All of the ingredients are likely sitting right there in your spice cabinet! Just do a little measuring, a little mixing, and you’re ready to make your favorite ranch dressing or dip or whatever other ranch-ness you may love in less than 5 minutes. It is seriously that easy!

The great thing too about homemade ranch seasoning is that it won’t be full of un-pronounceable mystery ingredients. Just your simple herbs and spices, and some optional powdered buttermilk if you’d like (similar to powdered milk).

I love using mine to make skinny Greek yogurt ranch dip, ranch dressing, or I’ll even just use the mix to season some chicken or fries. Delish!!!

  • Yield: 1 cup 1x

Description

Delicious ranch seasoning mix is super easy to make homemade!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons dried dill
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried chives
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • optional: 1/3 cup buttermilk powder*

Instructions

  1. Whisk all ingredients together until blended. If you want a more finely-ground seasoning mix, you can pulse the mixture in a food processor until it reaches your desired consistency.
  2. Store in a sealed container for up to 1 year.  (If using the buttermilk powder, refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 1 month.)

Notes

Buttermilk powder: If you would like to make ranch seasoning that is identical to the stuff sold in the packet, you can add buttermilk powder to this recipe.  Otherwise, you can just add fresh buttermilk if you are turning this seasoning into ranch dressing.

Store-bought equivalent: Approximately 3 tablespoons of this mix (made with the buttermilk powder mixed in) equals 1 packet of the store-bought ranch seasoning mix.

To make ranch dressing: Combine 1 tablespoon ranch seasoning mix (including buttermilk powder) + 1/3 cup mayo + 1/3 cup milk, and whisk to combine.

  1. I will absolutely be trying this, I normally just buy the packets. I even already have the buttermilk powder on hand.

  2. God bless you and this post. I’m pretty sure the only thing I talk about more than smoothies and oatmeal on my website are “creepy seasoning packets.” LOL

  3. OMG. Seriously. I’m all over it.

    Happy V-day!

  4. I love this! Must try. And, that settles it … I am giving in and buying some cute Weck jars.

  5. I love the idea of powdered buttermilk, trying that next time for sure!

  6. I need to make a big jar of this stat… I never knew powdered buttermilk exisited… off to figure out where to buy this special ingredient! Love this!

  7. The powered buttermilk needs to be refrigerated after you open it, so wouldn’t this need to be refrigerated? And how much would you uss like 1 tablespooon to 1 cup of milk?

    • I was wondering the same thing about the powdered buttermilk
So I called the company and they told me the reason for putting the powder in the frig. is after a while it will get hard so I mixed up the recipe and put it in the frig. Hope this helps

  8. I had no idea it was this easy! Now I’ll have to make it all the time!

  9. Well, bless you my friend! We all need this!!!

  10. Oh my heavens, yes! I love this and absolutely need this as part of my pantry staples!

  11. If you use the buttermilk powder, do you use milk to mix it up with and how much of the ranch mix?

  12. Love this so much!! I love to enjoy veggies with a ranch dip!

  13. This looks real similar to mine – I usually will leave the buttermilk powder separate and in the fridge until I’m ready to use it, and then mix it with a blend of mayo and yogurt, the ratio of which depends on how healthy I’m feeling like making it that day. If I need dressing, I’ll add a little milk or whey.

  14. I needed this recipe! I would so rather make my own homemade ranch mix, don’t know why I never have! A friend just asked for a recipe for dressing, how do you make yours using this mix?

  15. Wow! So easy! And everything I already have on hand! I love this! I hate the store bought kind! Awesome!

  16. To make a dip or dressing how much seasoning and how much milk/mayo/sour cream?

  17. Will you share the recipe for dressing. Have the mix made…don’t know what to do. Going to try the dip tonight.

  18. This would be great but you forgot to tell us what to mix it with and how much liquid and how much of the mix to use.

  19. I’m not a fan of ranch anything but I have some colleague who often complain about the lack of ranch-anything in Germany. I’ll send them to this recipe next time! :)

  20. Your photos are so lovely Ali, I adore them :) And I’m super excited to try this recipe, I love finding ways to make homemade versions of store-bought items.

  21. I totally love this, Ali – like all the way.

  22. If you use real buttermilk, do you use the same amount as the buttermilk powder plus the 1/3 c. regular milk?

  23. You have no idea how excited to I am to see an egg free ranch recipe! I am allergic and to eggs and ranch is a killer! to be honest, all cream dressings are! I am so stoked to try this with Vegan Mayo!

  24. I made for vegan friends using vegan sour cream. Your spice mix was perfect!

  25. This looks like an really good recipe!! I cant use store bought ranch or seasoning packets due to the MSG in them…causes severe migraines….thanks for a homemade version that looks sooo good!!

  26. I use the packets at home to make veggie dip…how much of this would you recommend to put in a 16 oz. container of sour cream?

    thanks!

  27. I use Kefir Milk instead of mayonaise or buttermilk. I can do without the fat. If I want fat, I use whole milk Kefir Milk rather than low fat or non fat. It thickens. Sometimes I put a large spoonful of plain yogurt in with it.

  28. Mine turned out runny when I mixed it with the milk and mayo, will it thicken up in the refrigerator?

  29. Made the mix and loved it! I personally prefer mine with mayo and Greek yogurt and omit the milk altogether. I did 2/3 cups Greek yogurt to 1/3 cup mayo, super yummy!

  30. Any ideas on how to substitute for a dairy free version?

    • Veganaise

    • substitute powdered goats milk for the powdered milk(buttermilk) and i use goats milk yogurt to make dips with…my friends and family have not noticed the difference i can tolerate goats milk but not cows milk and use almond milk for drinking but the goats milk for sauces and dips and such is great

    • Advocado with a little bit of olive oil.

  31. Just hosed down bone-in skin-on chicken breasts with this dry seasoning used as a rub. Lifted the skin flap and put pats of butter between the meat & skin, then sprayed the top of the skin with olive oil so it will be crispy.

Letting the chicken think about the future for about 2 1/2 hrs before roasting in the oven. Should be fab.u.lous!

    • Just as a follow up – this recipe was easy and amazing! The chicken was juicy, tender and flavorful. Since these bone-in breasts were really large, I also cut a slit (almost butterfly)in the thickest part of the meat and put the dry ingredients there, too. Hate when the top part of chicken is flavorful, but the rest is bland/dry. This couldn’t have been better! Thanks for the recipe idea!

  32. I’m a little late to the party here but wanted to say that I’m so happy to find this mix recipe and am very eager to try it. The only thing I lack is the chives, which will be remedied this very day. I’m going to try just the dehy-buttermilk-less mix in Bulgarian yogurt. (Don’t like Greek yogurt – troublesome mouth feel. I know…I’m weird.) This has great promise! Thank you!

  33. Any idea how much the equivalent would be to a package of ranch dressing mix?

  34. Thanks soooo much, now I finally have a recipe!! In The Netherlands it is so hard to find this ranch dressing, so this one will be printed for my recipe box!

  35. I halved this recipe, eliminated the salt & buttermilk powder and used it as a flavor substitution (with reduced-fat sour cream) in a healthier alternative version of Buffalo Chicken Dip. The result was GENIUS! Thank you so much for posting and helping me reduce sodium and fat calories!

  36. Hi, this mix looks great and I’m totally trying it! I will eventually go buy some buttermilk powder, but all I have is non instant powdered milk from the LDS cannery. I will post how my results turn out, this is exciting!

  37. If you use fresh buttermilk, do you use 1/3 Cup buttermilk and omit the 1/3 Cup milk?
    Thanks!!

  38. Made this today with no buttermilk powder and mixed with Greek yogurt. I added a little splash of apple cider vinegar and it was perfect!

  39. Thank you for this! I hate the mystery ingredients in packets!
    Also, LOVE your measuring spoons.

  40. When substituting this instead of a Ranch packet, how much should you use of the dry mix. I did use the dried buttermilk, so I’m assuming that’s ok for substituting the packets?

  41. I don’t like having those small packages around and I don’t usually have the right one when I want it or it isn’t enough of it. Thank you so much for posting this.
I made a double batch for Superbowl weekend, where I am making Pull apart bread with cheese and other goodies in the crevices. Then the recipe calls for mixing Ranch dry mix with melted butter and then brush this all over the bread, wrap it in foil, and bake it for 15 minutes. Some add chicken, regular or turkey bacon, veggies +. Could also add it with some organic oil and spread it over the bread. Thanks again. Have pinned it.

  42. Fabulous! Just the other day I was pondering how to make a ranch mix on my own, to use up the last of some sour cream and yogurt I had in the fridge. After making my own taco seasonings and steak rubs at home I just can’t bring myself to buy the packaged seasoning mixes anymore, I don’t like the additives. Thanks for sharing :)

    • I agree. I make all my rubs etc. and don’t buy mixes any more! This is a blessing, I just add lesser amounts to smaller amounts sour cream because I live alone.

  43. I found this recipe on Pinterest. This is the best ranch seasing mix I’ve tried. It mixes up in a flash, and the flavor is spot on. I am not a huge dill fan, so I might reduce the dill to 1 tsp., but the longer you let the dressing or dip rest after mixing, the more the flavors meld into the perfect specimen of ranch deliciousness. Thanks for sharing.

  44. where do ya get dry butter milk ?

  45. I was really looking forward to trying this but I was little disappointed, and I think it might just be me. I left out the buttermilk powder because I have no idea where I’d find that. I also used fat free plain greek yogurt and fat free milk. It turned out really watered down, and I think that has something to do with the fat free milk. I think if I had included the buttermilk powder, it would have turned out fine. I still have some of the spice mix left, so I think the next time I’ll use fat free sour cream and maybe a splash of milk. And I’ll see if I can find the buttermilk – seeing another commenter say that they found it at Walmart is promising since that’s where we do our grocery shopping.

    • You can find powdered buttermilk in the aisle that they keep the baking goods and the powdered milk.

  46. AVOCADO!!!! Mash up an avocado and mix in to taste…I omit the powdered buttermilk…I’ve added dehydrated bell peppers to…YUMMO!!! Adding some vinegar would probably make it better too!!!

  47. I assume that the dry buttermilk would need to be excluded if the mix is made for someone who is vegan. Yes? If so, do you know of a vegan substitution that can be used? I’m trying to convert a Taco Soup recipe that calls for a package of dry ranch dressing mix.

    • Hi Taren,

Eek, I actually don’t know a buttermilk substitute. I would just add in 2 tablespoons of the mix (sans dry buttermilk) and 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast.

      ~Ali

  48. You are the best , I enjoy looking and trying your recipes .

  49. Hi! I made this (along with the Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup) to use tomorrow when I make Crock Pot Ranch Pork Chops. I left out the buttermilk powder and added in a bit of paprika for color. Thanks for posting this! If this crock pot recipe works out (as my sister and everyone else raves it will), I will be making it a lot. And needing both cream of chicken soup and ranch seasoning a lot. I blogged about making both today at my blog and will blog again tomorrow in the post-supper post about the ranch pork chops.
