Why We Love It:
This bar was famously a hangout for Hemingway, Picasso, Dalí and Van Gogh back in the day. And as you will see when you walk in, the memorable decor (and cobwebs) haven’t been touched since. ;) We take all of our visitors here when they come to Barcelona, and it’s always a fave.
- Absinthe, the once-hallucinogenic drink of legend, is the house specialty. It has a heavy anise (black licorice) flavor to it, so if that’s not your thing, take a sip of your friend’s absinthe, just to say you’ve tried it. ;) Also, if you don’t have a lighter, borrow one from the bartenders so that you can light up the sugar cube that is served with it.
- That said, we should note that classic preparation does not include setting the sugar cube on fire. Rather, you’re simply meant to put the fork on top of your drink, place the sugar cube atop the fork, and slowly rinse the cube with the water bottle provided until it dissolves in the drink below. Then stir and enjoy.
