Scrub-a-dub-dub! I made you another recipe for the tub!
Actually, this peppermint sugar scrub is so simple that it hardly counts as a recipe. But I thought I’d share it for anyone else out there who might be looking for some last-minute DIY gifts for the holidays (your friends will love it!). Or for anyone who has stocked up on tons of essential oils and is looking for extra ways to use them (I know you’re out there!). Or for anyone else out there who might be looking for a touch of extra relaxation during the busy holidays (hello, soothing qualities of peppermint!). This scrub is calling your name.
Plus, it’s super easy to customize, it only requires about 3 ingredients (with no actual peppermints), and it’s ready to go in literally about 1 minute.
Ok, sorry if I threw anyone off with the actual peppermints in the photo. This sugar scrub recipe actually just uses peppermint essential oil in it for that minty fresh flavor. If you really want, you could ground up some peppermints and toss them in too, but they will turn your scrub a bit pink.
To make the peppermint sugar scrub, simply mix together:
- 1 cup granulated white sugar (or any sugar)
- 1/2 cup mild-flavored oil (grapeseed oil, avocado oil, or melted-but-not-hot coconut oil)
- 8-12 drops essential oils (or more/less to your desired strength)
Stir until combined. Then transfer the mixture to a cute little glass jar for storage and you’re ready to go!
I used Weck tulip jars (the 1/5 jelly jars) for mine and tied some red bakers twine around them for decor, but any mason jars or covered containers will work.
To keep things simple, I just made my scrub with straight peppermint essential oil. But adding in a few drops of lavender, vanilla, or any other fruity essential oils would also pair lovely with mint.
Quick. Simple. And so soothing and perfect for stressful days, chilly months, dry skin, and just anytime you feel like a scrub in a tub.
Not only would this be totally relaxing, but I feel like it would get me in the holiday spirit, too :)
I made a grapefruit scrub for my cousin as a present last year…this may be perfect for ME this year!
hmm.. raw sugar ok? white sugar seems bland to me
Homemade gifts are my fave! I love the peppermint, but I’m afraid that I might want to eat it, so I’d definitely have to add an oil that I wouldn’t want to eat ;)
I would be keeping one for myself for sure! What a great gift.
Have made this, it’s very nice!
Thanks Annette, we’re glad you liked it!
Thank you for your awesome recipe. I will try to make it for my boyfriend. :)
Thanks Ashley! This is actually Ali’s recipe though. :) I just write the recipe roundups on the blog, and help out with comments. :)
Wondering if its ok to use brown sugar?
I don’t have white sugar but just bought some brown sugar so was hoping that would work just as well? Let me know- thank you so much!
Hi Jenn! The smell might differ a little, since brown sugar is toastier and mapley in its scent, but other than that it should work just fine! It will still be an excellent exfoliator. : ) We hope you like it!
Sure thing! Any sugar should be great. :)
This looks so great! I was just wondering, how long do these scrubs last?
Thanks Sara! We think this will last about a month or so, but sometimes certain oils will go rancid (and some quicker than others). Also, if you add a few drops of vitamin E oil, that will help prolong the shelf life of this scrub. We hope you enjoy!
Hello the scrub looks great, but I was just wondering what type of oil you used so that your scrub would be white?
Hi there! We used grape seed oil but the way the photo was shot is probably what’s making everything look so white. We hope you enjoy!
If I want to make this red, can I use red food coloring , or what else would you suggest? Thanks!
Hi Jeannie! Hmmm, we wouldn’t add red food coloring (we’re pretty sure it would stain everything when you use it). You might be able to find some red sugar? We hope you enjoy this!
Likeing the peppermint scrub…might add sone peppermint sticks.. I know it will turn pink…but it sure will taste yummy!!
Oooh, a pink version of this would look so cool! We hope you enjoy this! :)
I would not recommend to use white refined sugar as it is quite rough and it could damage your skin. Instead use brown sugar.
Thanks for your tip, Edita!
I am super excited to try this out! I am curious how long these scrubs will last? I want to make about a dozen for my coworkers, but if I make them a week prior to handing them out would they still be ok?
Oh yes, that will be fine! We think the scrub should last at least a couple of months if not longer. We hope they enjoy!
Thanks! This is amazing, but could I use mint extract?
Thanks, Susan — we hope you enjoy, and yes, you could definitely use mint extract!
