After yesterday’s quote on the dangerous dreamers of day, I came across this George Eliot quote (above) and knew that what followed my thankfulness for dreams, was my thankfulness for courage — the beauty of each lies in the connection to the other.
Today’s word is: COURAGE
We all know what courage is and since the word probably gets tossed around a lot, I thought perhaps a less-used (but more sprightly) synonym might need to resurface.
pluck (noun)
- courage or resolution in the face of difficulties.
- Synonyms: mettle, spirit, bravery, determination
As the 20th President of the United States put it:
A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck.
James A. Garfield

I love the word “pluck.” It makes me think of all my favorite childhood heroines, from Little Orphan Annie to Laura Ingalls Wilder to Nancy Drew to Jo March.
Ahhh – these girls were some of my favorites too! Plus Anne of Green Gables and The Little Princess!
Laura! Nancy! Jo! Anne! LP! Yes, yes, yes, & yes. I’d also add Emily (of New Moon…also by L. M. Montgomery). And Lucy (of Narnia fame).
Plucky heroines are the best.
This word always makes me smile. My goal is now to use it multiple times this Thanksgiving!
I am thankful for friends with pluck, who challenge and inspire me to live a life of adventure. :)
