This classic White Russian recipe is easy to make with vodka, Kahlúa and cream.
Looking for a creamy, cozy, iconic cocktail to serve this time of year? Let’s mix up a White Russian. ♡
This classic cocktail comes together easily with just three ingredients — vodka, Kahlúa and cream. Its creamy finish and subtly sweet coffee notes make it the perfect drink for sipping on a relaxed evening at home or serving at a get-together with friends. And best of all, it comes together easily in just a few minutes.
The classic White Russian recipe below is my go-to, but the best part of making homemade cocktails is that you can adjust any of the ingredient amounts to taste. I’ve also included some popular variaions on the classic cocktail below, if you’d like to play around with swapping in different spirits or add in fun flavorings. (Peppermint White Russians are always a favorite this time of year!) So the next time you’re craving a Kahlúa cocktail, grab some vodka and cream and let’s get to mixing!
White Russian Ingredients
Here are a few quick notes about the classic White Russian ingredients that you will need to make this cocktail:
Vodka: Vodka has a neutral flavor which gives this cocktail a smooth, clean base and allows the other flavors to shine. I recommend a mid-range vodka, such as Absolut, Grey Goose or Tito’s.
Coffee liqueur: Kahlúa is the most popular coffee liqueur used for White Russians, which adds a rich, slightly-sweet, vanilla-caramel coffee flavor that pairs perfectly with the cream. Other coffee liqueur options could include Mr. Black or Tia Maria.
Cream: Heavy cream gives a velvety texture to this cocktail and balances out the bold flavors of the coffee liqueur and vodka. If you’d like a slightly lighter alternative, feel free to use half and half instead. (I don’t recommend milk, which is too thin.)
White Russian Variations
Here are a few popular twists to a classic White Russian recipe that you’re welcome to try:
Black Russian: Omit the cream from this recipe.
Irish Russian: Swap Irish whiskey in place of vodka.
Vanilla White Russian: Use vanilla vodka (or an additional splash of vanilla syrup).
Coconut White Russian: Use coconut milk or coconut creme in place of the heavy cream.
Peppermint White Russian: Add 1/2 ounce peppermint schnapps.
Chai White Russian: Add a splash of chai concentrate.
Espresso White Russian: Add 1 shot of espresso.
