How To Make Beer Bread

Honey Beer Bread Ingredients:

All you need are 6 simple ingredients to make this honey beer bread recipe:

  • All-purpose flour: This recipe is total comfort food for me, so I have only ever made it with all-purpose flour.
  • Baking powder: To help the bread rise.
  • Salt: I used fine sea salt.
  • Honey: Which balances out the savory flavors here with the perfect hint of sweetness.
  • Beer: I typically use an IPA, but just about any kind of favorite beer will work in this recipe!
  • Butter: Which we will use to grease the pan and brush on top of the bread to give it some extra-delicious buttery flavor.

How To Make Beer Bread:

Alright, here are the basic steps for how to make beer bread — it couldn’t be easier!

  1. Make the batter. Super simple! Just stir together the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then stir in the beer and honey until combined.
  2. Add the butter. Pour about half of the melted butter into a 9×5-inch bread pan, and brush it all around to grease the inside of the pan. Add the batter and spread it out in an even layer. Then brush the remaining melted butter evenly on top of the batter.
  3. Bake. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick or knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Remove and transfer the pan to a wire baking rack and let the bread cool for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Serve. Slice with a bread knife, serve warm and enjoy!

Description

This honey beer bread recipe is quick and easy to make with just 6 simple ingredients!  See notes above for possible seasonings that you can add in too.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/4 cup honey*
  • 1 bottle (12 ounces) beer
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Make the batter. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt until combined.  Slowly pour the beer and honey into the flour mixture, and stir until combined.
  3. Add the butter.  Pour half of the melted butter into the bottom of a 9×5-inch bread pan, and brush it around to grease the inside of the pan.  Add the batter and spread it out in an even layer.  Then brush the remaining melted butter evenly on top of the batter.
  4. Bake. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick or knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.  Remove and transfer the pan to a wire baking rack and let the bread cool for at least 10 minutes.
  5. Serve. Slice with a bread knife, serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Honey: If your honey seems super-thick and does not drizzle easily, I recommend warming it up in the microwave or on the stovetop for a few seconds so that it will mix into the batter more easily.

  1. Hi,
Can I eat this bread whilst pregnant ?
Thank you for letting me know =)

  2. Do you need to change the baking time and/or temperature if using a glass pan rather than a metal .

  3. I would like to make this bread, however I must eat gluten free. Has anyone used gluten free all purpose flour and gluten free beer? If so please let me know how it turned out. Thanks so much.

  4. Really delicious. More like a scone in texture but for super quick result – awesome.

  5. So easy and came out great. Used self-rising flour. Thank you!

  6. I just made 6 loaves of this bread. The only things I did differently was add garlic pepper, sifted all the dry ingredients together, and stirred the beer and honey together before adding it. It turned out amazing! My family loves it! My first attempt at beer bread is a success!!

  7. Followed the recepie and added some cheese. Cooked for 50 minutes and the middle was still raw. The bread ended up overcooked in order to get the middle fully cooked. Not sure what I did wrong.

  8. Super easy and tastes great. Added some sharp cheddar and garlic for extra flavor.

  9. Silly questions, but the alcohol evaporate? I have kids and worry about little drunks ?

  10. I liked he texture of this bread but found the taste of baking powder overwhelming and I had to throw it out. Is 1 tbsp the correct amount?

  11. This is the yummiest beer bread recipe I have found. I tried several that were okay, but this one takes it up a notch with the honey instead of sugar. I also added a good sprinkle of crushed rosemary and a small handful of shredded cheddar cheese to the batter. What a fast, easy, delicious bread! We especially love the crispy, buttery crust.

  12. Will make beer bread tomorrow. I will comment after. This recipie is amazing.

  13. I’ve made this bread twice now, once with IPA and the second time with a Corona (yes people you can drink a Corona beer) :-)
I’m not a fan of beer, the first loaf was good but the second loaf with the Corona was amazing!! Going to try it with cheese and jalapeno’s next time.

    Thanks for this wonderful recipe!

  14. I used the recommended amount of salt but the bread tasted a bit salty. Can I reduce the salt down to 1/2 teaspoon? Or put more honey in?

    • Did you use sea salt? It’s less salty tasting than table

    • Did you use salted butter? sometimes that impacts the flavor of some of my baking recipes so I use unsalted butter when I bake

    • I have used this recipe a number of times for family brekkie. Everyone loves it. I use Tusker beer (our famous Kenyan beer). Love it!

  15. I’m so excited to try this recipe! I had no idea you could get Boulevard overseas. We are in KC, and the only beer I drink is Boulevard Wheat. This recipe is so perfect for the stay-at-home orders.

  16. I made this a few days ago and it did not turn out very good. It had a very bitter after taste. I had to down it in butter and honey to be able to have a slice. Any suggestions for another go around? I used an IPA beer.

    • I know this reply is super late, Lina, but if you’re not a fan of bitter/hoppy tastes, I wouldn’t use an IPA. IPA’s range widely in flavor, but are typically bitter (from the hops used). I think a lager/amber ale kind of beer would probably be better. I even read another user used a pumpkin beer that sounded really good!

  17. I used light beer which may have been reason it did not have more of a yeast flavor which I like

  18. Yeast is hard to come by at my grocery store these days due to the pandemic, so I was really excited to try this. It came out wonderful and we ate half the loaf the same day I baked it. We slathered it with cream cheese and strawberry preserves and it was perfect!

  19. Made this bread today! Delicious!

  20. This was the first bread I ever made and was delicious! We decided to add some chocolate chips to it too! YUM!!!

  21. It has a good taste but the bottom crust was tough. I don’t know if I cooked it too long or because I had to use a glass loaf pan. I will definitely try it again.

    • The tough on the bottom texture is most likely over mixing or not enough butter on the bottom, but it gets like that when I forget an ingredient that I wanted to add and I try to mix it in after the fact-thus over mixing (turns out horrible)

  22. So quick & easy & the family loved it!!

  23. This was lovely, I tweaked it a bit but it came out utterly delicious.

  24. Outstanding easy recipe! Loved the soft texture and flavor. I used Landshark beer and the kitchen smelled amazing as it baked. Very pleased to find a bread to make without the usual required yeast. Will definitely make again with some add-ins.

  25. Super easy and really nice. Serve w soup for dinner. I used a watermelon IPA and it was fantastic. No residual watermelon taste. Going to try a porter next time I prefer just a bit more salt

  26. QUESTION: Has anyone tried it with gluten-free plain flour? Cheers

  27. Has anyone ever used agave instead of honey? I dont have enough honey.. :(

  28. Delicious and very easy, especially for a bread. I was glad to find a recipe that didn’t require yeast, since we can’t find any right now. I baked for 50 minutes, but should have done 60 minutes. Made this to go with the Lemony Orzo Soup from this site and both were amazing!

  29. Looks great! Could you put the batter into muffin tins for individual portions?

  30. Tried this with hard cider since I didn’t have beer. Turned out great.

  31. Wow super easy and delicious. Going to have fun trying different beers and honeys/ sugars. Might reduce the salt a smidge. Thumbs up from the 2 teenagers too, it is not lasting long…. made with strong wholemeal bread flour and very bouncy.. well done cheers Mat

  32. Are there adjustments to be made for baking this at high altitude? If so I would love to know!

  33. Excellent!!! First time to make beer bread and this recipe was so easy and yummy!! I used a Guinness for this and the flavor was amazing. I will definitely add this to my recipe box.

  34. So good! I used 2 cups of spelt flour and one cup of white flour. I will definitely make this bread again.

  35. I just shared this recipe to facebook. It was amazing! I added shredded asiago cheese, chopped fresh rosemary and some garlic powder. OMG! My husband and I aren’t beer drinkers, but I had two bottles left over from a party and was looking for recipes that called for beer. So glad I stumbled on this one! I’m gonna have to buy more beer so I can try it plain, and with cheddar and jalapeno, and maybe apples and cinnamon….

  36. I couldn’t find yeast to save my life, but this recipe turned out so well that I don’t care anymore. I’m making my second loaf right now. The first time I used a local fruit sour and got a slightly purple bread. It was great. I’m baking my second loaf now, this time with an ale.

  37. We made this twice so far, but will be a staple in our home! Absolutely delicious toasted with butter and marmalade.

    Some tweaks:
    *Sifted the flour
    *added Beet syrup (German treat)
*cooked at 375 for 50 mins.

    Next time!
    *trying maple syrup 1/4 cup
    Or
    *trying molasses 1/4 cup
    Or
*trying garlic powder and chunks of cheese + olives

  38. I’ve made this recipe a few times, and it was always pretty heavy. I took a clue from a gluten free version I made for my wife that included 1 tsp soda and added that to this recipe, which is a pretty standard one. It made the bread a little lighter, taller and just as good tasting.

  39. Made this using a local craft bock beer with honey in beer. It’s delicious. Moist. Can taste the honey and it has a biscuit texture. Hubs is happy. Score!!

  40. Made as directed and turned out great. Only had a lite beer and that worked just fine. I did add 1 cup shredded cheese as suggested in the article. Took 50 minutes in my oven. Husband has just requested that I make it again. Using an ale this time.

  41. I’ve made this 3 times and it is phenomenal. I don’t think I’ll make yeast bread again. It’s easy, versatile and delicious. I used bread flour. I’ve added fresh herbs and once did a salty crust. I used olive oil instead of butter and the crust is beautiful. Thank you for this gem.

  42. I Made This Beer Bread With Shredded Cheese It Was Wonderful. Thankyou For The Recipe.

  43. It’s really simple and easy to make. Flavor is awesome but my bread came out clumpy. Any advice on how to avoid clumpy pieces?

  44. I love beer bread, and I particularly love this recipe, made with Yuengling. I shared the recipe with my grandmother, and she also made and loved it!

  45. This is a wonderful recipe. I’ve made it twice this week. The first time I made it according to directions and used Mill St Organic Pilsner. It was tasty but had a fairly strong beer flavour (to be expected with beer bread). I made it a second time with Storyteller Lager and the addition of herbs and shredded cheddar. And let me tell you this was the most delicious loaf of bread I’ve had in quite some time. The beer flavour was more mild but not sure if that’s because it was over powered by the other flavours or because of the type of beer I used. Either way, I will be making this again and again. Thank you for the recipe!

  46. I made this yesterday. Used a heavy IPA. It cooked in exactly 40 minutes. I cooled it for 10 minutes, cut in half and my husband delivered it to our neighbors. We both thought it was very good. This morning I toasted it in a pan with a bit of butter, fried an egg next to it and it was delicious! One note, when baking, the butter spilled over the top a bit. Next time will put a piece of tin foil on the rack below to catch and spillage.

  47. wonderful tasty bread

  48. Soooo delicious and EASY!!!!! Love it!!!

  49. Can this bread be made in a bread machine?

  50. Has anyone made this with gluten free flour?
