If you have never made beer bread before, I’m telling you, bread-baking doesn’t get any easier than this!  Simply stir 5 basic ingredients together (flour, baking powder, salt, beer and honey), brush melted butter on top of the batter, and bake until golden.  Then — voila! — in less than an hour, the most delicious, buttery, cozy and comforting beer bread will yours to enjoy in no time.

It can be served up with just about any kind of meal, although we’re especially partial to dipping it in soups and stews at our house.  It can also be easily frozen and saved for later, if you would like.  And it’s also easy to customize with various herbs or a handful of shredded cheese, if you would like.

Honey Beer Bread Ingredients:

All you need are 6 simple ingredients to make this honey beer bread recipe:

  • All-purpose flour: This recipe is total comfort food for me, so I have only ever made it with all-purpose flour.
  • Baking powder: To help the bread rise.
  • Salt: I used fine sea salt.
  • Honey: Which balances out the savory flavors here with the perfect hint of sweetness.
  • Beer: I typically use an IPA, but just about any kind of favorite beer will work in this recipe!
  • Butter: Which we will use to grease the pan and brush on top of the bread to give it some extra-delicious buttery flavor.

How To Make Beer Bread:

Alright, here are the basic steps for how to make beer bread — it couldn’t be easier!

  1. Make the batter. Super simple!  Just stir together the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then stir in the beer and honey until combined.
  2. Add the butter.  Pour about half of the melted butter into a 9×5-inch bread pan, and brush it all around to grease the inside of the pan.  Add the batter and spread it out in an even layer.  Then brush the remaining melted butter evenly on top of the batter.
  3. Bake. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick or knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.  Remove and transfer the pan to a wire baking rack and let the bread cool for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Serve. Slice with a bread knife, serve warm and enjoy!

This honey beer bread recipe is quick and easy to make with just 6 simple ingredients!  See notes above for possible seasonings that you can add in too.



  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/4 cup honey*
  • 1 bottle (12 ounces) beer
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted


  1. Preheat oven. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Make the batter. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt until combined.  Slowly pour the beer and honey into the flour mixture, and stir until combined.

Honey: If your honey seems super-thick and does not drizzle easily, I recommend warming it up in the microwave or on the stovetop for a few seconds so that it will mix into the batter more easily.

  1. I’ve made this bread twice now, once with IPA and the second time with a Corona (yes people you can drink a Corona beer) :-)
    I’m not a fan of beer, the first loaf was good but the second loaf with the Corona was amazing!! Going to try it with cheese and jalapeno’s next time.

  2. I used the recommended amount of salt but the bread tasted a bit salty. Can I reduce the salt down to 1/2 teaspoon? Or put more honey in?

    • Did you use sea salt? It’s less salty tasting than table

    • Did you use salted butter? sometimes that impacts the flavor of some of my baking recipes so I use unsalted butter when I bake

    • I have used this recipe a number of times for family brekkie. Everyone loves it. I use Tusker beer (our famous Kenyan beer). Love it!

  3. I’m so excited to try this recipe! I had no idea you could get Boulevard overseas. We are in KC, and the only beer I drink is Boulevard Wheat. This recipe is so perfect for the stay-at-home orders.

  4. I made this a few days ago and it did not turn out very good. It had a very bitter after taste. I had to down it in butter and honey to be able to have a slice. Any suggestions for another go around? I used an IPA beer.

  9. It has a good taste but the bottom crust was tough. I don’t know if I cooked it too long or because I had to use a glass loaf pan. I will definitely try it again.

    • The tough on the bottom texture is most likely over mixing or not enough butter on the bottom, but it gets like that when I forget an ingredient that I wanted to add and I try to mix it in after the fact-thus over mixing (turns out horrible)

  16. Delicious and very easy, especially for a bread. I was glad to find a recipe that didn’t require yeast, since we can’t find any right now. I baked for 50 minutes, but should have done 60 minutes. Made this to go with the Lemony Orzo Soup from this site and both were amazing!

  23. I just shared this recipe to facebook. It was amazing! I added shredded asiago cheese, chopped fresh rosemary and some garlic powder. OMG! My husband and I aren’t beer drinkers, but I had two bottles left over from a party and was looking for recipes that called for beer. So glad I stumbled on this one!   24. I couldn’t find yeast to save my life, but this recipe turned out so well that I don’t care anymore. I’m making my second loaf right now. The first time I used a local fruit sour and got a slightly purple bread. It was great. I’m baking my second loaf now, this time with an ale.

    Some tweaks:
    *Sifted the flour
    *added Beet syrup (German treat)
    *cooked at 375 for 50 mins.

    Next time!
    *trying maple syrup 1/4 cup

  26. I’ve made this recipe a few times, and it was always pretty heavy. I took a clue from a gluten free version I made for my wife that included 1 tsp soda and added that to this recipe, which is a pretty standard one. It made the bread a little lighter, taller and just as good tasting.

  27. Made this using a local craft bock beer with honey in beer. It’s delicious. Moist. Can taste the honey and it has a biscuit texture. Hubs is happy. Score!!

  28. Made as directed and turned out great. Only had a lite beer and that worked just fine. I did add 1 cup shredded cheese as suggested in the article. Took 50 minutes in my oven. Husband has just requested that I make it again. Using an ale this time.

  33. This is a wonderful recipe. I’ve made it twice this week. The first time I made it according to directions and used Mill St Organic Pilsner. It was tasty but had a fairly strong beer flavour (to be expected with beer bread). I made it a second time with Storyteller Lager and the addition of herbs and shredded cheddar. And let me tell you this was the most delicious loaf of bread I’ve had in quite some time. The beer flavour was more mild but not sure if that’s because it was over powered by the other flavours or because of the type of beer I used. Either way, I will be making this again and again.   34. I made this yesterday. Used a heavy IPA. It cooked in exactly 40 minutes. I cooled it for 10 minutes, cut in half and my husband delivered it to our neighbors. We both thought it was very good. This morning I toasted it in a pan with a bit of butter, fried an egg next to it and it was delicious! One note, when baking, the butter spilled over the top a bit. Next time will put a piece of tin foil on the rack below to catch and spillage.

  39. I love this recipe. Use it often when unexpected company shows up and I need bread. I’ve added cheese and jalapeños. Yum. I’ve added dried tomatoes, dried onion flakes and cilantro. I’ve added Garlic, dill, dill pickles cheese and left out the honey. It is so versatile. What’s in the oven now? A new experiment. Dried cherries and almonds and 1/2 cup honey. We will see. 😄

  41. Amazing recipe and SO easy to follow. I have never made bread before and I was amazed how delicious this turned out. The only thing I would change is that I chose an IPA which had far too much of a citrus flavor which came out in the bread (Still amazing-but a bit sweet for my taste). For future bakers I would suggest using a very piney/salty IPA or another saltier beer.

  42. I love this recipe, it uses much less butter than other recipes call for, but still delivers all the flavor. We don’t like IPA beer, so we usually make it with Firestone 805. It has become a favorite as we shelter at home, nothing like fresh bread for comfort food!! :)

  44. Used Michelob Ultra and baked in a clay bread pan. Used an Eggwash half way through. Beautiful loaf. Light and tasty. Good toasted with basted eggs on top. Tried it before with Texas Shiner Bock. That was really nice too. Sub self rising flour for the flour, salt, and baking powder if you have it.

  49. The good news is that I used gluten free flour and the bread held up beautifully. The bad news is that I used a strong IPA and the bread just tastes like cooked beer, which is not great, especially for my beer hating husband. I thought the extra hops would give it more of a sour taste but this is not edible. I will try again with a lighter beer and cheddar cheese.

  50. I just made this with leftover Miller beer, maple syrup instead of honey and sub one cup whole wheat with the two white wheat. I also baked it in a cast iron dutch oven 4 qt lined with parchment paper and put the butter in the same as the recipe. Baked for just 40 minutes and it turned out superb. It was so easy and quick.
