This classic strawberry banana smoothie recipe is easy to make with 4 simple ingredients in less than 5 minutes, and always tastes so sweet and refreshing!

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe

Pretty sure that I have made literally thousands of smoothies over the years. But one particular smoothie recipe that will always be a fave was the one that started it all for me…

…a classic strawberry banana smoothie. ♡

It was the very first smoothie recipe that I ever learned to make back in high school when smoothies were the hip new thing and everyone was blending up a storm trying to recreate their favorite smoothie shop favorites at home. And even now, decades later, it still remains one of my all-time faves.

I mean, let’s be real, strawberries and bananas were just meant for each other. Their sweet flavors pair together perfectly in a smoothie. And when blended up with a handful of ice and your choice of milk (dairy or plant-based), this strawberry banana smoothie is delightfully smooth and creamy and satisfying. Feel free to also add any of your favorite smoothie boosters in too, such as fresh greens, seeds or protein powder. Or you can also play around and jazz up the flavor with some fresh ginger or other fruits and veggies that you might like to add in too.

This base strawberry banana recipe is super flexible if you would like to get creative and play around with it. Or it also stands the test of time just on its own! So go with whatever sounds good, and let’s make a strawberry smoothie together!

Easy Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Ingredients:

To make this strawberry banana smoothie recipe, you will need the following ingredients (see recipe below for amounts):

  • Frozen strawberries: Or you can sub in any other kind of frozen berries that you have on hand.
  • Banana: I typically just use fresh bananas. But if you have frozen sliced bananas, you can omit some of the ice in this recipe.
  • Milk: Any type of milk will work for this recipe — cow’s milk, almond milk, oat milk, you name it.
  • Ice: However much is needed to achieve your desired smoothie consistency.
  • Optional add-ins: See ideas below!

How To Make A Smoothie:

This strawberry smoothie recipe couldn’t be easier! Simply…

  1. Combine ingredients.  Add all ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend. Pulse until smooth. (If your smoothie seems too thick, add in a bit of extra milk or water. If it seems too thin, add in more strawberries or banana.)
  3. Serve.  Then pour the smoothie into a serving glass or two…and enjoy!

Smoothie Recipe Variations:

This base recipe is incredibly flexible, so please feel free to experiment with other variations that sound good! Some of my favorite smoothie boosters include:

  • Greens: Nowadays, I almost always toss in a large handful of fresh baby spinach or kale to make this a green smoothie (or technically, a brown smoothie) while I’m at it.
  • Ginger: I also love adding in an inch or so of fresh ginger to give this smoothie a bit of an extra kick.
  • Vanilla: You are also welcome to add in a 1/2 teaspoon or so of vanilla extract for extra flavor.
  • Greek yogurt: Feel free to also add in 1/2 cup of plain (or vanilla) Greek yogurt to make this smoothie a bit more creamy.
  • Powders: You can also add a scoop of protein powder, acai powder or maca powder.
  • Seeds: I also typically add in at least a spoonful of either chia seeds, hemp seeds or ground flax seeds too.

  5. I used blueberries that we picked yesterday instead of banana. I’ll try it with the banana next time. It was more like a slushy. It was refreshing and delicious for a hot summer day.

  6. I used one cup of fresh strawberries, 1 frozen banana, 1 cup oat milk, couple spoonfuls of nonfat greek yogurt, spoonful of flax seeds, and handful of spinach and this was so surprisingly good.

  19. the initial result was a little too tart for my tastes, however i added 1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of honey and it tastes great! i’m drinking it right now and i really enjoy it :)

  20. I loved it! I added a tad of honey and it tasted great!

  21. Great base recipe for those of us just starting on the smoothie craze! I used frozen blueberries banana and vanilla almond milk and it was perfect!

  22. Can you use fresh strawberries as well & do i have to use milk will apple juice work

    • patrica gardner i dont believe apple juice will work because u need a thick liquid in the smoothie to get its texture

    • We use apple juice sometimes as a liquid in out smoothies. But we do prefer frozen strawberries so we don’t have to add ice to get that thick cold consistency.

    • Patricia, Apple juice will absolutely work! You may need more banana to thicken it. A smoothie can use any kind of liquid so the blender blades don’t get bound up. The creaminess comes from something like adding yogurt or banana.
Make your smoothie your way! And then enjoy!

    • I used orange juice and it was great!!!

  23. How many calories?

  24. Almost like ice cream!

  25. It was amazing. We all loved it

  26. do the strawberries have to be frozen?

  27. Really a great recipe. I cut it in half as I am trying to lose weight. I doff my hat to you. Well done.

  28. I’ve been making this smoothie almost everyday for 2 months. It is so good. I have organic frozen strawberries and when i made it for my sister she said it was too sour so i just added 0 calorie stevia packets and she said it was really good. I personally like it without the packets. When I’m just making it for me i just divide the recipe. 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup ice, half a banana, and 1/2 cup milk and i usually have to add an extra splash of milk.

  29. Ohh yaa. I’ve just seen the Strawberry Banana recipe. And, I’ve prepared it using my newly purchased hand blender. Now, I’ve a question. Can I make similarly like this with any other fruits or vegges? Hoping the positive answer. Anyways, thanks for sharing the awesome article.

  30. Must be that while I was in Atlanta this friend of mine made a smoothie without milk. He used freshly squeezed orange juice and a bit of honey. Guess its just what you enjoy mainly

  31. I love this recipe! But I need to know how many calories since I am trying to gain weight. If anyone could let me know that’d be great.

  32. I usually use yogurt instead of milk for my strawberry banana smoothies. But not quite sure how much. Could you please send me a recipe for strawberry banana smoothies using milk and fruit not frozen?

    • Personally, I only use frozen fruit as if you don’t, you end up with a brain freeze waiting to happen and if you wait a couple minutes, the entire smoothie becomes instantly watered down from the amount of ice you need to use to get it cold enough and the right consistency. If you only have fresh fruit, try cutting up the desired amount and throwing it in a ziplock back in a the freezer for the next morning. Saves on prep time and makes the smoothie 10x better than with room temp/slightly chilled fresh fruit.

  33. I usually use yogurt instead of milk for my strawberry banana smoothies. But not quite sure how much. Could you please send me a recipe for strawberry banana smoothies using yogurt and fruit not frozen?

  34. So simple and delicious

  35. Looks delightful queeeeeeeen

  36. Loved it. I added plain Greek yogurt, vanilla unsweetened almond milk and vanilla protein powder. I also used fresh strawberry and a very ripe banana. Originally went with the 1cup of ice but realized after it needed about another cup. Turned out amazing. Will definitely be using this as a baseline. ?

  37. I loved it
    thank you

  38. it was pretty goood

  39. I used half&half but it still tasted amazing

  40. Strawberries and banana are my favorite combination for smoothies. I also like to add ice. But not all blenders are fine with that. I have one of these:

  41. it was very plain for me. maybe add a 1/2 tablespoon of honey or sugar and it would prob taste not so bland

  42. I love strawberry banana smoothies I drink it in the summer and its good for my diet

  43. This smoothie and others that are similar are NOT good for someone trying to lose weight, right? And too much natural sugar for someone that has diabetes, right?

  44. Great I didn’t have strawberries so I used blueberries instead and it tasted amazing

  45. Yummy! Just started WW and need healthy stuff. This is a def go to! Thank you!

  46. I accidentally bought frozen raspberries instead of strawberries. Very good but also tart. I halved the recipe and used almond milk. Like another poster I needed to add just a bit more milk. Love this recipe!! Thank you!!

  47. a little thick but berry good 😊

  48. This says 2 servings, but doesn’t say how much 1 serving is. How much did this make for all of you? We’re opening a coffee shop and are looking for a good smoothie recipe. Sizes 12oz & 16oz cups. Thanks!

  49. Tasted good!
