Healthy eating month continues on Gimme Some Oven today with a smoothie I’ve been hooked on lately. It’s basically a blueberry avocado smoothie recipe, but I like to call it my brain power smoothie because it’s chocked full of tasty ingredients that are good for brain health.
And let’s be real — I’m a total nerd, so anything smart and brainy sounds good to me.
Speaking of being nerdy, I’m not quite sure why this came to mind, but have I ever told you the story on here about me winning my 4th grade spelling bee? Oh yeah, I rocked it at my elementary school with the word “a-u-t-u-m-n, autumn”. So I was sent to the regional spelling bee to represent the school, but unfortunately I got eliminated on the first round. My word? (Now please picture a packed auditorium full of parents and students with an awkward old man very dryly reading the words.)
(And yes, I asked for the definition.)
I think that may have been the most “scandalous” moment that spelling bee crowd had seen in years. But thanks to that darned “a”, my spelling bee career didn’t go much farther. At least I learned a new definition about “splits in rock formations”. :)
But I digress…
So whether you’re also into spelling bees, or (like me nowadays) would just like help remember where on earth you laid your keys, this brain power smoothie is here to help. It’s super tasty and sweet, it’s easy to make, and it’s oh-so-good for you.
The 6 “brain health” ingredients you need are:
Just google ’em. They are all fantastic “food for thought”. :)
And making this banana avocado smoothie couldn’t be easier. Simply add everything to a blender…
…and blend until it’s nice and smooth.
Then dive into that yummy berry flavor and just feel yourself getting smarter. S-M-A-R-T-E-R, smarter. :)
Ha, that’s the best story! I can’t imagine how awkward that poor old guy must have felt when he saw the word on the card ;)
This smoothie looks so good – I am pretty sure my brain still thinks it’s the holidays so it needs all the help it can get!
I am all about smoothies for breakfast. This one looks and sounds amazing. Filled with some of my favorite things, I know I would adore it. Of course, the brain boost would be much appreciated as well.
This sounds like a dream! I love smoothies like this.
Fabulous food for thought. I am going to make this for breakfast tomorrow. It looks absolutely delicious!
I think you should’ve called it brain food. Just sayin’.
Looks amazing, friend!
I too won my elementary school spelling bee (j-e-e-r, jeer) and lost in the first round of the regional bee. I’ll never forget how to spell “malady”, m-a-l-a-d-y! What 5th grader knows that!?
Can’t wait to try this smoothie!
Great ingredients. Great blender. Great photography. Seems like I add chia to just about everything these days. Thanks for sharing!
I love it! Great pictures! I still haven’t made a smoothie with avocado, and now I’m totally I-N-S-P-I-R-E-D! :)
Such a gorgeous color!! Loving this, Ali! These are some of my favorite foods!
And congrats on the spelling bee! :)
I’ve just recently discovered the wonderfulness that is putting avocado in smoothies. So good!
Hi! I found this page through a friend’s Pinterest and was wondering if you could answer a question for me. What would be a good replacement for the banana? It seems that every smoothie recipe I come across is full of bananas and they just aren’t my thing (that’s actually quite an understatement, lol). Thanks in advance for your help! :)
Sure thing. If you eat dairy, I recommend adding in Greek yogurt in place of bananas. Or you can also substitute in a peeled and pitted avocado.
1) You story just made my day!
2) I JUST discovered the ah-may-zing-ness that is pomegranates. Those babies make my eyes and my tummy happy!
3) I have always wanted to try avocado in my smoothies as I have heard that it makes them creamy dreamy smooth.
Trying this! Pinned!
Oh Ali…what a great story. I consider myself to be good at spelling, but I would have been mortified as a 4th grader to get that word! And now somehow, I’m forever going to connect smoothies with cleavage! My new year’s resolution is to actually eat breakfast. It’s the one meal I neglect. But smoothies like this are going to help me out greatly! This one looks fabulous!(Going to start bookmarking the other smoothies, too!) Happy New Year!
Oh lord, who would include “cleavage” in a spelling bee? I remember winning my elementary school spelling bee with the word “sandwich”. It had been spelling incorrectly by two people before me, and when I won, my classmates cheered and lifted me up like I was a rock star or something. What excitement for a seven-year-old!
I just so happened to pick up pomegranate juice on a whim at the supermarket this week – I’ll have to give this smoothie a try. :)
Teeheehee!! Cleavage! Hysterical, Ali! :) I was a co-winner of our high school (yes, high school…how embarrassing) spelling bee, but only because the other winner and I both kept spelling the words wrong, so the spelling bee had to keep going until one of us spelled something right. It never happened, so they finally decided to call it a tie. It was the longest spelling bee ever and the rest of the school pretty much hated us for keeping them bored in the auditorium for so long. LOL!
So, maybe I should’ve had one of these brain power smoothies that day and I would’ve been the SOLE winner. ;)
Just made this – or a variation of this. I didn’t have any ice so I used mixed frozen berries instead. And I didn’t have any juice so I used rice milk… SO good. And SO creamy. Thank you for a gorgeous recipe!!!
I need to try avocado in my next smoothie, and this is the recipe I’ll try it in…love all the ingredients!
This smoothie looks amazing except I have a major aversion to bananas. Is there anything that I could substitute?
Ha, I love that story, how awkward for you. I can’t wait to try this smoothie :) sounds delicious!
This smoothie sounds amazing! I would never think to put avocado in a smoothie but that’s genius!
What are your thoughts on thee Blendtec blender?
I love this recipe and I’d love to utilize it, but I am very allergic to bananas! Any suggestions for a good substitution?
Sure! I like substituting Greek yogurt or extra avocado in place of banana. Or for this smoothie, a different fruit would also work.
Can I replace blueberries for grapes? In my country don’t have blueberries .. Or do you recommend me other fruits? thank you :)
You could, although I would more recommend replacing them with other berries instead like strawberries or blackberries. Just about any fruit will work though!
instead of berry juice can I use something like Knudsen organic pear juice, because almost all other juices have added sugar and I only want naturally occurring sugars from the whole fruit which Knudsen pear juice is.( pressed whole pears)
Sure, you can totally use pear juice. That sounds yummy!
I made this smoothie this morning, with the exact ingredients, and it was AMAZING. I loved it and I’m definitely making it from now on. It’s one of the best homemade smoothies I’ve ever had. <3
i love it
This will be tomorrow’s breakfast! I’ve added avocado to a chocolate smoothie, but haven’t thought to add it to my daily breakfast smoothie. And the pomegranate juice… swoon!
How many calories is there in this smoothie? BTW tastes great!
I’m really digging the mugs in the blueberry smoothie picture.
Omg! I just made this and can’t believe how delicious it is! I absolutely hate avocados and have been trying to find ways of getting them into my diet because of how healthy they are. I always taste them in whatever I mix them with but this was delicious, creamy, and couldn’t taste it at all. Thanks for the awesome recipe :)
Wow, thank you Angel! That’s so cool that you enjoy this despite not liking avocados! Glad you found something you can enjoy them in.
Hi, this looks very good. I am diabetic and wondering what the nutritional value (carbs, etc) is. Thank you.
Thank you Rita! We’re sorry but we currently are not publishing nutrition facts on the site. The nutrition calculators available are not 100% accurate, and we never want to publish anything that might be misleading. However, many of our readers love the My Fitness Pal nutrition calculator, so feel free to try that for an estimate. We’re not sure about the sugar content in blueberries and bananas, but the pomegranate juice (and most other juices in general) has a good amount of sugar in it. We don’t want to give you incorrect info, especially since you are diabetic, so we recommend asking your doctor, or a healthcare professional. We’re sorry we can’t be of more help!
The recipes and the presentation looks absolutely amazing. I try to make breakfast smoothies so thank you for these delicious recipes!
Thanks Christina, we hope you like this one!
I make this every day for my toddler and I. Except i keep my blueberries frozen, instead of using ice cubes, which leaves more room for goodies instead of ice and keeps my blueberries from going bad. Just a tip :)
That’s a great idea Kourtney, and we’re happy you and your little one enjoy this! :)
I just made this and can’t believe how much I like it! I only had orange juice on hand, but its still yummy! Great recipe.
Thanks for sharing Tara — we’re so glad you enjoyed it! :)

This looks amazing!! We’ll be making some of these recipes for meal preps
Thank you, we hope you enjoy! :)
Hi I’ve been absolutely excited to try this yummy recipe out, and after I tasted it I’ve even more felt addicted to this great breakfast idea or small snack in between meals!:)
I’ve just skipped the pomegranate juice, as I haven’t got any and didn’t found it in our local grocery….
I’ll make soon a blogpost and would link it to your recipe if you don’t mind?!
Hello Nika! We’re so glad you enjoy the smoothie, and that’s sweet of you to want to share it on your blog! That’s definitely fine, just as long as you link back. :) Thank you!
Omg! Love this smoothie. Mmm ?
I loved this. So tasty and delicious. Will be making it again.
Yum! I nixed the ice and used frozen fruit instead. I also blended up everything except the juice and chia seeds. It was nice and thick so I evenly distributed into a silicone muffin tray and popped them in the freezer. Once frozen, I put them in a bag back in the freezer. Whenever I wanted a smoothie, I would use 2- 3 of them blended with pomegranate juice and chia seeds. Very satisfying!
Sooo funny. “The next word is cleavage”.
“May I have the definition, please”? Hilarious! Anyway, the smoothie looks yummy. Now I need to wipe away my laughter tears.
Thanks for sharing.
Drinking it now! Yum! I’m not an avocado person but I’m wishing I put the whole thing in.
Is it okay to consume the blueberry avocado smoothie everyday?
I just made this smoothie and it was so good, I also added a teaspoon of ginger paste to it and it was delicious!!
THIS IS FREAKING DELICIOUS!!!!!
