TGIF, friends!
Although I don’t know about you, but I feel like I could have used another workday or two in this week. It was one of those weeks where I worked my tail off, but somehow only seemed to check off half the things on my to-do list. Especially when it came to the joy of all joys of self-employment — taxes. Wouldn’t you know, there were just so many other things on my list that sounded more fun than receipts and 1099s and check-writing galore? :)
So, ahem, I might just procrastinate those one more week. But after a week of working hard, I’ve been looking forward to a weekend of playing hard — although in a nerdy, literal, music-geek sense. You guys, I bought myself a set of harmonicas!! And I am ridiculously excited to try and start learning how to play them. I even got the awkward little harmonica holder that goes around your neck, so that I can multitask while playing guitar. They are definitely a bit more complicated to play than I imagined (didn’t realize how much of harmonica is actually sucking air in). If I get decent though, maybe I’ll serenade you over Instagram.
Speaking of playing instruments, I found this gem of a photo in an old scrapbook last night. I have to admit that I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic lately about my old career working in music 40+ hours a week. Don’t get me wrong, I was totally burned out on the specific job I had when I left, and blogging has turned into the most incredible second career ever since. But still, it’s a strange thing to invest literally years and years of your life learning a craft and a career field, and then transition into something completely different. Sure, there are tons of things that overlap between career fields. But then there are other specific skills (say, the years I spent getting lightening-fast at Sibelius, or learning how to rehearse a band) or networks I formed that completely don’t relate to my new career. So I’m trying to sort through if there are any of those past skills that are worth continuing to grow, of if their season has just come and gone (which is ok).
I don’t know — have any of you made that sort of total career change before? How did you handle it?
Would love to hear any thoughts. I may process through more of that on my life page soon since it’s on my mind. If nothing else, though, it has made me remember how much I used to adore cooking and blogging when they were my hobbies and music was my career. So now that the roles have been reversed, I’m re-learning how to really make music a hobby again, and kind of excited about what that might look like. Who knows, 2014, who knows…
I do know, though, that I had a fun time pulling together this week’s version of The Friday Five. We’ve got everything ahead from grown-up school supplies, to happy hour drinks, to some talented kids who are bound to make your day. As you can tell from this intro, my train of thought is all over the map this week. But I hope you enjoy.
Cheers. :)

cute folders always gets me..cant wait to bust out my maxi dress again. happy friday.
OMG. Love the ps 22 kids.
I also love what you wrote about career changes. I relate. I went back to school and did a 100% career change 5 yrs ago. It’s a big adjustment, but neat to see how things from the past end up being useful in my new career today. You never know. Now I want to know what your music job was!
Beautiful dresses! Also, I have been really into kale salads, so that one is making the recipe list!
Happy Friday!
Love these Friday Five posts! It has been almost two years since I made a complete career change and I am still learning to handle the change! I was a teacher for seven years when I left the education field to focus on my direct sales business and while there are so many things I love about what I do now, there are also things I really miss about teaching. I think the most difficult transition was making the change from leaving my house to go to a job to working from home. There are many perks to being self-employed and working from home, but there are also many challenges that come along with that! I would love to hear more of your thoughts on the transition in a future Gimme Me Some Life post!
Don’t those ginger beer margaritas sound awesome?? I seriously cannot wait to make them for my boyfriend and me :).
Love your Friday Five posts!

Oooh I’ll take one of each of those drinks and balance them out with those salads! Perfection!
I will take one of each.
I’m having a week like yours too, except I am so glad it’s the weekend because I am exhausted!
Thanks for the share, friend! That’s a good lookin’ round up if you ask me. Honored to be a part of it!
Consider me officially intrigued by all those cocktail recipes… And would love to see a post on your career change!
