Discover: First Lines #16 {Gimme Some Oven}

#16: ABCDE

I began this {Discover: First Lines} series back in August to shake up my preconceived notions a bit — and remind myself of all the books on my shelves!

Besides the fact that at the beginning my garden was verdant and full of flowers and now is covered with a dusting of snow, I’ve learned several things along the way:

These aren’t groundbreaking realizations per se, but somehow this tiny journey of discovery has led me to wake up a little and look for inspiration where I don’t expect to find it — or at least save a little room for inspiration to find me. And one or the other is bound to come up with something good.

Since the end of the year is approaching fast and the holiday season is upon us, I decided to wrap up this First Lines series with one book for each of the last five letters of the alphabet: A-E. And, this time I’ll actually share them in alphabetical order.

Coralie Bickford-Smith: Artist Interview and Giveaway

As I’ve mentioned before, I love Penguin Books. So, imagine my delight when I stumbled upon the website of one of their book cover designers — Coralie Bickford-Smith. It was like waking up to snow on Christmas morning. Besides having a delightful name, she also has a keen imagination when it comes to literary design. And, with her work — you can definitely judge a book by its cover.

To top it all off, she was kind enough to let me barrage her with questions over several emails in order to give you a behind-the-scenes peek at book jacket design. And — give away a lovely original screenprinted literary illustration, too!

I still remember feeling giddy when I saw the first Cozy Classics cover of Pride and Prejudice last year. Immediately, my imagination was captured by these tiny felt characters journeying through a vast (and very real) world. The clever juxtaposition of the fictional with the real, showing the strengths and beauties of each, was absolutely brilliant. And, the Cozy Classics team was kind enough to sponsor one of my first giveaways last December — giving one of you their first two books: Moby Dick and Pride and Prejudice.

Ever since, I’ve been curious about the creators of Cozy Classics – twin brothers Holman and Jack Wang – and their creative process. Through their Facebook page, I have continued to be inspired by their considered creations and the detailed effort they put forth to produce such refined quality. Creativity like theirs brightens the world. And I am thankful for their contributions to the world of books.

10 Books I’m Thankful For

November 27, 2013 by bet

Thanksgiving Day is almost upon us. A few days ago, Penguin Books launched #thankthebook, asking readers to tweet about the book that made them love reading. I don’t have a clear memory of the first book I loved, but immediately I thought of C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series — and tweeted that they introduced me to the multifaceted magic of life, stretching my imagination and my heart.

Inspired by this Thank-the-Book idea, I selected ten books that I am thankful for — not because they made me love reading, but more for how they have affected me. Though all ten are definitely among my favourite books, it was interesting to realise as I was pulling books from my shelves that I don’t necessarily feel gratefulness for a book simply because I love it.

Discover: First Lines #15 {Gimme Some Oven}

This week I pulled one of my all-time favourite books, a more recently remembered favourite, and two books I’ve had on my shelves for years but haven’t yet read. I wonder how long it would take if I made myself sit down and read all those as-yet unread books on my shelves — months? years?

Have you ever thought about how people often have books on their shelves that they haven’t read, but rarely own cds or dvds that they haven’t yet listened to or watched. Why does owning unread books seem normal, but unwatched movies seem silly?
